Default Power Steering Control Valve - Is it safe?

How secure is the Ball Stud in the Power Steering Control Valve? I always worry about stuff going wrong. This seems like a weak link to me. What are the chances that the stud would pop or pull out?

If the ball is worn or the socket s worn then yes it can pop out and that would be bad. You can put your eyes on it and have someone turn the wheel back and forth slowly to see how it's acting. If's it's really loose you'll see. Some play in the ball stud is normal but it should be rather tight and secure. If it looks loose, pop it out of the drag link and physically inspect it. If it's easy for you to move it toast.

The ball stud might get worn/loose, but it's trapped in there well. I can't imagine that it could wear enough to pull out of the control valve. I think you would decide the steering would be too loose to drive the car before that would happen.

I used to think the same thing. It happened to me and a friend and we ditched at 45.

i rebuilt mine and replaced the ball stud because it was spinning on the pitman arm and it wore loose.it would have never come out from that and the ball stud seemed very secure in the valve assembly.i am the very cautious type but am not concerned with the stud coming out.

Hmm, that picture is interesting. Does the ball stud install from the back side? It doesn't look like that ball could fit through that hole. I thought it dropped in and the two cups holds it in place.

it fits through the top and is surrounded by the half sockets.play will be felt there as it needs the power steering pump pressure to tighten up.
