I removed the Dash harness from the 72 yesterday and am in the process of checking all the connections. However I have located a couple surprises and was hoping someone may be able to id what they are. the first is pictured below. Does the "Key Buzzer" supposed to look like this?
It appears to be some sort of cap on it.
Second, the stop lamp switch seems to have some sort of resistor wired into it and I don't see this on the doc rebuild wiring diagram. It has definitely been wired in at some point but what for? Should I remove it and just rewire the connections?
second pic is a capacitor, installed to stop the pop noise when you put on the brakes thru the stereo, the componet/capacitor is probalbe toast from age. remove it.
I'll look tonight and confirm but on my 72 I'm pretty sure mine look just the same. The door buzzer is correct. I'm not 100% sure on the resistor but it looks like I remember that just like yours is.
Alright, here's more. I looked at the doc's rebuild wiring diagram there are a couple of items that seem odd. First, is this what the power connection for the cig lighter looks like on your 72?
Secondly, where does the light immediately to the right of the cig lighter connection on the diagram fit? On my 69, if I recall correctly, it fit in the ashtray somewhere?
On the 69, the lighter connection looked like this:
Is this the correct lighter for a 72? what is the spade on the side of the lighter for (at about 1 oclock)
On my 72 the terminal on the lighter is connected to a orange (always on) power connector. The ground for the lighter is thru the shifter plate. So, I think that your lighter is not original.
The lighter should have a metal shroud with a bulb in it. It clips onto the side of the lighter, and is illuminated with the rest of the dash lights.
There are two other bulbs that connect to the underside of the shift plate. There is a bulb that connects under the Heater/AC controls (I believe this is a unique bulb), and the other (at least for my automatic) bulb connects to the hole in your picture, it illuminates the shift positions ('PRN123').
Also, I believe the hole in the bottom picture is just to be able to access the screw underneath - no bulb goes into it.

The center of the lighter is hot the same (circuit) orange wire that connects the clock.
