power steering question

Default power steering question

having a problem on my 1980, the cylinder for power steering is new,the snap ring and seal keeps poping out of place after short drives and leaks,i put it back in place and it pops out agian! any ideas? thanks

Unless you can see an obvious problem with the snap ring, and you want to replace it yourself. I would just return the whole unit. No sense in screwing around with something that is obviously not correct.

Take a close look at the snap ring. One side is slightly rounded, the other side has a distinct sharp edge. The sharp side is installed in the the direction of force so it 'digs in.'

But, you also need to use additional force to make sure that snapring is FULLY seated in its groove. Just putting it in place with snapring pliers isn't enough. You have to use a screwdriver tip (or other tool) to make sure it is pressed into that groove as far as possible. [And, the 'sharp' edge of that snapring needs to be placed to the outside.]
