Default 1968 BB Question

I'm looking at a car and have a question that i think i know the answer to.

Is there anyway for a big block car with engine suffix IR to have a 5500 rpm tach?

The protecto plate pamphlet for the car is also stamped "replacement" in red letters across the front. Does anyone know what that is all about?

Thanks for answering these novice questions

Hi m,
I'd think the likelihood of an IR, (427/435), car leaving St. Louis with a 5600 red line tachometer is pretty small; in fact I'd say not at all.
What does it's stamp pad look like?
The IM 427/400 tri-power car would have had the 5600 rpm tachometer.
I've never seen a replacement POP, but I guess the dealer could issue a new one for a plate that was lost.
Regards,
Alan

Consider the 427/400 and the 427/435 are both tripower big blocks and look very nearly identical. Wrong tach and a replacement POP. You have to wonder whether the car was originally a 400hp car.

It could also have started life as a 390 horse as the tach redline is the same as the 400 horse (5600 RPM's).

Other hints you can look for. Is there a fuel return line (2nd line) on the passenger side frame rail? Are there caps or u-bolts on the rear end half-shafts. Is there a rear sway bar?
