That happened to me the other day as I attemp to replace the Rear Main Seal, since I had the car jacked up I reach up close to the master cylinder and open it that way. I replace the wire with a SS steel cable, I cut small section of the handle and drilled a hole big enough for the small cable and center punch it to hold the cable in place.
There are some plugs installed in the upper portin of the firewall extension just behind each of the hood catches/strikers. If you use a long screwdriver you can remove the plastic plug exposing a hole about 3/4 in in diameter. You should be able to reach in through the hole and push on the arm that activates the catch to release. If you do this on the drivers side the two are connected with a cable and it will release both sides at once.
when you replace the cable with a new one, use a peice of the old pull cable,
for an emergency pull wire, connect the new and old cable,
just let the old cable dangle in the engine compartment,
this way if it happens again,... you will have a backup pull-wire.
