have a 1972 with a new 350, old quadrajet did not rebuild the carb yet the engine will turn over and start - sort of . sound like it s running on 3 -4 cylinders. can t keep it running long enough to adjust the timing. will stutter along and then back fires through the carb and dies. need some help. advance or retard the timing ? and if so which way is which ? thanks gg
Almost sounds like the distributer us 180 out or a tooth or two off. If tweeking the timing back and forth does not allow it to run, you may need to check.
It could be a timing issue. Can you give some more information. It ran ok until I did.....(fill in the blank).
Check your plug wiring to the distributor. See that the firing order is correct and your plug wires are in the 18436572 firing order. If this is off then you may get the type of symptoms you describe.
Then it goes to the timing issue. If the distributor has been adjusted it could be too far off of base timing.
Back firing through the carb: Too far advance.
Back firing through the exhaust: Too far retarted.
If it hesitates when you try to give it gas with the throttle, or if it backfires throught the carb when you give it gas with the throttle, many of the guys had a good suggestion with checking the wire location.
ALSO, these things can be caused by a vacuum leak. Take a look around to make sure you vac advance line is plugged along with anything else you can see. Check every port on the carb, just to make sure.
best of luck,
