Is there a way OTHER THEN to take the starter OFF, to get the spark plug protector/cover off! #2 AND #4 are run thru it then up to the distrib. I got the front bolt out by the motor mount. But cant even see the rear one!!!
Are you talking about the spark plug wire shield? The one that's kind of shaped like a boomerang? If yes, then yes, it can be removed without taking the starter off, but you have to have the right tools.
I just changed my wires and couldn't get that damn thing off. I was able to thread the new wires in and slip them in behind. I never thought changing wires would be so difficult!
I was watching Mecum where they talked about all the shielding on corvettes and how "most of the sheilding ended up in the garbage can" cause they are such a PITA.
I've been able to remove all brackets/covers except this last one! Just one bolt!!! And the darn bolt doesn't even need to come all the way off! Just loosen so the bracket can slid out. But the damn starter is in the way.....

I cursed at that V shield myself the first time I wanted to remove it
Went ahead and pulled the starter.
If you CAN get at the bolt, make sure the battery is disconnected! I bought a nice used shield and you can see where it got arc burns all over the bracket!
SOMEONE must have got it out with the starter in place! AND the battery cable.
I was able to get all the bolts out, guess what, you still can't remove the guard all the way. I had to wiggle it around to get enough of a gap to get the new wires in. Changing wires became a weekend job (Feel like such a rookie saying that!)
I recently replaced my plug wires, I did remove the starter for better access. After doing some research on here I learned some valuable information.
1) Remove the boots off of the ends of the wires on the distributor side to make routing them a breeze, just get a small screwdriver, slip it under the boot and spray some WD-40 in it and the boot will slip right off.
2) The plug wires from longest to shortest are #2 and #3, because they have to cross in front of the distributor, next is #4 and #1. #5 #6 are the same then #8 and #7.
3) Just a little diagram I drew for doing my wires. Thanks to Roger Owsley CF member here for the info. Hope this helps as much as it helped me.

Yes the starter has to come off to get the V shield off. If you don't show the car or don't care about the V shield leave it off or cut a hole through it to give you access to the block drain plug. Makes draining the block on the passenger side much easier the next time you change antifreeze.
