Default Rear Spring

HI Guys,

I would like to ask the difference of the spring rating between the rear spring fitted to a 1973 454 big block and that of a 1980 gymkhana spring.

The rear spring on my 73 has lost its tension in three of the leafs , and i have a new spring from a 1980 , will this affect the handling of the vette in a detrimental way at all and can it be retrofitted ???

The spring for the 1980 should be 2 1/2" wide, versus 2 1/4" wide for the 73. You would have to change the differential cover to make it work, which IMHO is probably not worth the trouble. I would recommend just purchasing a replacement spring for the 73. Let me know if you need one sent to you, I have either the springs or the 2 1/2" covers in stock.

Default Rear Spring on a 73

Hi Andrew,

Thanks a stack for your input on this one .

i am going to see if the local guys can rebuild it to original , only because of the weight problem and the shipping costs .
If it cant be restored then i think i will have to go the same route as i went with my 80 vette , and fit a carbon fibre unit .

Thanks for the reply this forum and the guys on it are just brilliant
