I have a used LT-1 over-the-counter engine that was purchased in 1973 and has less than 10,000 street miles on it. It is a long block, no intake, carb, distributor or starter. Block has 4 bolt mains, std bore, crank is forged steel, standard and does not need turning or even polishing. Pink rods with flat top forged GM pistons, solid lifter cam, 492 big valve heads with factory guide plates and screw in studs. Engine was disassembled to clean and check everything. It is in mint condition and I am trying to establish a fair price. My brother-in-law wants to buy it. What is your opinion regarding a fair price?
I have an agreement with a friend to buy a similar engine, also less intake and carb, for $1500. Add the intake and carb, it is ready to go. A 4 bolt 350, now bored to 355, 8.5:1 and show quality.
it is a used 350 with no warrantee sold as is, and it would cost me 300-500 for me to ship. someone looking for a particular date coded setup might give you a couple extra hundred, but I would only pay a couple hundred more for the crank and big valve heads above and beyond salvage yard price.
it takes a brave man to sell a used engine to a family member or a friend, when it might scatter tomorrow.
Like I said, the engine is disassambled, he has already inspected it and he KNOWS engines, so he knows what he's looking at......................
Engine ran fine when pulled from a 65 Corvette 3 years ago. It was just greasy from an oil leak around both valve covers. It is documented to have 9689 miles on it and I have ALWAYS known the engine, and I seriously doubt it EVER saw 5000 RPM.
