Default 700r4 Dust Cover

My '79 has a retrofitted 700r4 in it. There is no dust cover on it currently. It was like that when I bought the car. Someone gave me a cover for it. I have read that some people say it is not necessary and to roll without it as it causes more heat buildup. I live in the country and have about a 200 yard stretch of sand/clay road from my driveway to paved road and on rainy days it gets kind of messy. So I am looking for opinions. Also does anyone know what size bolts are standard for mounting the dust cover?

Thanks, Rick

If you are talking about the "inspection cover", it has some sheet-metal type screws. The heads are 10 mm hex heads, but I don't know what size the screw threads are.

My trans shop gave me a generic plastic cover for mine. I had to cut it to fit the starter and it had some sheetmetal screws like mentioned above. No I don't know the size. I'd run the cover too.

I have not run a dust cover on ANY tranny in maybe 50 years now, never been an issue and some of the cars ran over 300k miles....

I don't even have one on the motor home...and it sees many miles of Florida sand/clay back roads.....or the '72 vette with 200 4r in it....

I was out of town for a few days and not able to reply back. The only reason I was thinking of putting a dust cover on was I had to get under the car the other day with the motor running. I was checking for collector leaks after putting the top end of my engine back together after having head work done and I am a bit of a klutz sometimes and saw that flywheel and torque converter spinning away and thought to myself that I could see a finger going into there.

I hear you, not any doubt, me too, but I have a suggestion, when you get the car in the air, up on stands....you obtain a large smooth rubber mat, mine came from a old bowling alley, about 1/4" thick and smooth from the ball return/seating section, I slide under and out super easy with that slick rubber under me....much better than any creepy creeper....pretty hard to be klutzy with that ease of movement....
