For cars pre 1973 its a hot look (Personally I dont care for the 74-85 plate)...If your car falls in that category its a real nice touch.
If youve never had vintage plates on a car before, the registration is a little different....you'll have to take a picture with both plates, and showing the original 197# registration on the rear plate and an insurance card that is marked "HIS" and send it off to Albany.
It is very cool when states allow use of vintage tags on antique cars.
Here in Va they allow the use of them, and I also found a loophole that states if the car came from the factory without a front tag bracket, you don't have to run no front tag! Well, in 1973 Corvettes came from the "factory" with the middle grille installed. The tag bracket was in the back...my car was originally delivered in NC...No tag bracket...you see occifer..... ...it's worked great so far!
New York bounced back and forth using a single plate and 2 plates.
My '55 Nomad has vintage plates and '55 is a 1 plate year as well as '56 which is a '55 plate with a small metal '56 tag that attached to the lower corner of the plate.
All C3s would have to get a set of vintage plates in New York.
On the bright side it does cost less to register a car in New York with vintage plates (although that may be the only thing that does cost less here).
Hi,
In Maryland you can apply for Historic plates ($51.00), and then Vintage plates (26.50), which allowes you to display a plate from the car's era.
I use the plate that was on the car when it was new.
Actually a reproduction of that plate.
Regards,
Alan

The plates my wife got me (including a new 69 NYS sticker) are in good to just under very good condition but not perfect (just what you might expect for 40 + years). Found a company in Texas - Vintage Plate Restoration (any feedback?) that will restore them to new for $70 per plate. Gonna send them out and then finally post pictures of the car!
I bought a set for my '64 many years ago. They're just a generic number and like a dummy I passed on the chance to pay a little more and get A64-064. In Virginia once you purchase them you never have to renew or pay additional which is a real benefit since I have to renew the ones on three other cars annually. I think the vintage plates are a great addition to an older vehicle. Congratulations on your gift!

Thanks. I do agree that it definetly adds something to the car and in a sense, locks it into the period. Numbers on my plates are 5421. Wife laughs because 54 is the year I was born and in my mind, I'm still 21! LOL!!
I guess I'm either goofy or lucky - - I have every Ohio license plate I had from the 70's to early 90's and the Arizona tags from that pioint forward.
I'm also fortunate to have the opriginal California plates from my `73 . . all is a box in the garage . . .guess I oughta get out some wax and clean `em up to frame or put on the wall !
In Indiana you buy historial plate. Have the paper work noted of a chang in numbers to the year of plates that you want to use. And you have to carry the historial plates in the car. And it must be a Indiana plate.
They did not make new plates in 1977
They used a 76 with a sticked
Not as cool as the black California plates - but I have a set of NOS Saskatchewan plates (Canada). Was lucky to find these about 15 years ago. IMHO - vintage plates are a nice touch for a vintage vehicle. BK3
