Default Noob with a new 74

Just dropping a note to introduce myself. I just got my first vette last week. In the process of getting it certified for the road.

It's a 74 that was parked in a shed for the last 2 years. I trailered it home and parked it in the garage to start poking around. so far so good. The car was checked out my a local mechanic and we both found a few minor problems that I am working thru.

Wiper motor dead, brake leak in the left rear.
The last one I could use some help with is the speedo doesn't work (honestly ocifer, I wasn't going that fast). I have ordered the upper and lower cables but I have no idea where this cable comes out or and where on the Tranny it connects to....haven't had the car up in the garage yet as I am still waiting for the rear brake tubes to come tomorrow for the new calipers I already installed.

Anyone have a pic showing the placement of these cables?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ken

BTW, took my very first drive in the vette on saturday. She's running a little rough, but everyone commented on my grin.

The long cable will connect to your tranny on the drivers side right by the cross member. It is very hard to get to! The other end will connect to your cruise control transducer which is by/below your wiper washer bottle. The short cable will connect to your cruise control transducer and the other end to your speedometer. If you do not have cruise control or it does not work (which is common), advance or auto zone sells a longer speedo cable that will go right from your tranny to your speedo and you can bypass your cruise control.

Check this website out and go to the tech pictures link. Everything you will need will be there until you get your AIM. http://www.willcoxcorvette.com/

Thanks for the help. The pictures for the 73 to 75 do not show me much unfortunately.

I will following your routing when I can get back under the dash to follow the cable.

BTW, How do you tell on these cars if they have cruze control. I cannot find a control anywhere. The car has power windows, tilt steering, power windows so maybe it has cruze, but a lot of the labels are worn off. It used to have A/C but that was removed in the Engine compartment years ago I can tell.

OH Yeah I forgot...I have no idea what an AIM is

Hey Oshawa!

Congrats on the purchase! I have worn that same grin a time or two myself.

Cruise control...I believe there's a button in the end of the turn-signal lever, if you have it.

AIM=Assembly Instruction Manual

The other thing you may find useful is a Chassis Service Manual, search ebay for 1974 Corvette Service Manual.

Welcome to the forum, be sure to post some pics of your 74. Yes it is a great idea to get yourself some manuals, they are a great learning tool and show excellent pics of how everything works and where.

Thank you BrooklinIte...will have to get together once I am up and running....literally. Until I got this car, I thought it was only a dream. The first one I saw was total crap, I was very discouraged until I saw this one.

Thank you too sarge. I tried posting a pic in my album, but they are "awaiting approval".

The cruise control will be located by your windshield washer bottle and have a couple of wires going to it and also 3 or 4 hoses. It is about as big around as your fist. The AIM brakes everything down on your car to a gnats ***. Very very detailed.

Thanks again guys,
I ordered the CD manual on ebay.

I also ordered an owners manual (just to have it) as well as a set of door locks with keys, mine don't work, form Corvette Depot.

My brake parts should show up today as well as the speedo cables. If all goes well, I should have it back in for certification tomorrow and then the weekend is all mine....bwaaahaaahaaa

No factory cruise controls on C3's until about '77 or '78.

Ken indicated in his first post that he ordered an upper and lower speedo cable. If there is no cruise would there be two cables or just one, longer cable?

Possibly only one cable. The AIM will show it.

Good luck with your C3. I too am a new owner of a 73. Am enjoying driving it as I work out a couple of things. This forum is great.

It is believed that auto trans car came from the factory with two piece cables. For many years the two piece cable was the only available service piece.

The AIM shows a two-piece cable for RPO M40 (automatic transmission).

I don't believe RPO K30 (speed/cruise control) was offered until 1977.
