Default T-Tops

Hey guys,

Just a quick question. Are there no-nos for traveling with your ttops in your storage area behind the seats? I would also like to know what is the best way to do this. I drive a 1980.

I have T-Top bags, but they are nothing special, just prevent scratching. But my trunk space is not big enough to put them side by side. So I put a sweatshirt between the bags when I travel, but was wondering if there is a better way.

Thanks.

We have the T-Top bags as well and stack the tops. I haven't seen any problem with that so far and we have driven a few thousand miles that way...

T-top bags for sure, stacking them is the only way they seem to fit back there. Do you not have the tie-down straps in the back of your '80? I have them in my '79 and they're virtually the same car.

Bags and straps, no problem. There is a special way to stack them, I don't have a pic, but someone might.

Yes, I have the straps, but I did not use them. I thought that adding pressure might cause them to scratch on the buttons that hold the top flap down. That is another reason I ask about the best way to do it because I worry about those metal push snaps digging in.

Make sure the metal buttons are on the inside of the tops. I just stack mine in the bags and head out. I use the tie down strap so if I have to stop short they don't slide forward...

i put mine in the black leather bags, stack them but put a pillow between them
(i just leave the pillow in the back)

the pillow between the mirror glass tops gives me piece of mind that they won't crack by slamming into each other , while motoring

Pete.

Use the straps. You want to secure the tops so they cant bounce around and bang into each other, thats where the damage happens. I stack both bottom down on top of each other in the carriers with no problems.

You are not worried that the snaps from one won't dig into the other when they are stacked? You don't place one upside down on the other?

I'm sure there are other theories but the way I look at it, the tops have a concave shape to them which is strongest with the apex of the curve up as opposed to the two ends (think of an arch). Storing them this way gives the straps more contact with the tops to dissipate the force more evenly. Also, my bags have zippers on the edge so no problems with the snaps.

Silly question from a Corvette noobie.....
what came with it originally from the factory? Was it just the tie down straps, or was a bag even offered?

Bags with snaps, plus straps from factory.

That's a No-No. When stored in the back, the tops need to be strapped down.

Ok, dumb question I'm sure, but why do the tops need to be strapped down? Just for safety's sake (in case of an accident) I'm assuming? Or is there another reason?

My bags are a PITA to get the tops into, so I ended up buying a T-top Suitcase. It fits both tops and there's a pad you place between the tops.

Yes, Safety for one. Keeps them from whacking you in the back of the head in a panic stop. I understand folks like to believe that would never happen. I hope they're right, but why risk it?

Appearance #2; keeps them from rattling around on each other.

I picked up a couple of piece of 1" foam about the size of the tops from an upholstery shop. It slips in the bag with the tops, no more rattling and the strap stays tight. The shop owner said "Just get out of here and come back when you can spend some money".......no charge.
