So my took my dad out in the '77 yesterday since it was so nice out. About a mile from my house I see a cop coming down the road towards me. I wasn't speeding or changing lanes or doing anything I shouldn't have been. He was in the left turn lane and waited for me to pass him before he turned. I didn't see him make a u-turn, but about another two miles down the road I see the red and blue flashing two cars behind me. Both cars moved out of his way, but just as I went to do the same he pulled behind me! I pulled my license out and tried to figure out with my dad what I could've done wrong. The cop slowly approached my car and I watched him in my drivers side mirror. He never really completely came into my view, he stayed back a little behind me the whole time. I tried to hand him my license but he said he didn't need it. At this point, I was REALLY concerned. I half turned around so I could at least look at him when he talked to me, and just as I did he said, "yeah, sorry for stopping you. When you passed me back there I noticed you didn't have inspection stickers, but I didn't realize until just now that you have antique tags on this car." SHEW!!! He apologized and got back in his car and off we went. At least he could've told me my car looked good! Oh well, I'm just glad he was "man enough" to admit his mistake and apologize! Funny thing is, after about an hour of driving, I passed this same cop going in the opposite direction again. At the last second he realized it was me again and gave a quick wave! Something tells me that getting pulled over for no inspection stickers might happen to me again in the future.

When Michigan first started with non-expiring registration for "original plates." I got pulled over many times by all versions of the police that did not know the law had been changed. "Do you plan on getting your car registered? You can't just drive your car." followed by, "I never head of this" when I handed them the registration.
My wife kept telling me to just get regular plates put back on but it stopped happening a few years later.
Glad all is well and the officer did not hassle you.
In Ohio, our plates expire on our birthday. Mine is in February so when I got my sticker I put it where I would remember it and put it on before I started driving. Well, I drove the car for over a month before I saw the envelope with the sticker in it. It would have sucked if I got pulled over for expired plates when I already had them.

Yeah PA laws haven't changed for this in a long time, he just was thinking I guess. He saw an opportunity and jumped on it! No big deal, he was just doing his job. I'll just put money on him paying more attention next time!
If you really want to confuse them, there is a guy at Carlisle every year that sells PA insp stickers for all years. I'm planning on picking one up for my 75 just to get looks from my friends thinking I got ***** driving with a dead sticker.
Getting ready to put vintage plates on my 69 and have the same concerns here in NY - especially with younger cops who may not realize that vintage plates are perfectly legal.

I drove around NJ with a copy of the statute in my car just in case a cop stopped me who was not aware of the latest law (In NJ at the time they allowed no front plate on antique cars only. Seemed like very few people were aware of the change when it happened)

Glad to hear that you didnt get a ticket for this. One of Californias requirements is to have a front license plate. I have this on two of my vettes, but the other two didnt have a front plate when I bought it. Even though I only drive the cars on the weekend, I figure this is enough of a reason to get pulled over. I need to get the plates reissued to minimize the risk of being pulled over for something similar that you went through.
Your story should remind me to quit procrastinating and get this done.
i haven't been pulled over for it yet but i have my first personalized plate on the front of my 71 and legal antique plate on the rear. my sticker expired in 2011 but i have the up to date one in the car. just haven't bothered scraping the old one off yet. not only that but the law states here in dc with historic plate you are only supposed to drive on holidays and to and from parades. glad they don't hassle you for it though, stupid rule anyway.
the good news as you mentioned, he owned up to a mistake instead of trying to come up with something to justify the stop. here in Florida, we don't have annual motor vehicle inspection, so unless there is something else they choose to stop you for, expired " tag" on the plate is it as every type of car plate including vintage same year plates and " antique" plates still need a current tag on them.
I will never forget the time in 1955 when I, in my 1951 ****** Jeepster, was pulled over by a motorcycle officer. I was speeding and my car was abright yellow and, of course, the top down, and two young ladies in the passenger seat and in the back. The officer slowly walked up to the left reat passenger area and when I reached back to hand him the registration and my license, he..........told me to go home and put my license on his dresser and that I was grounded for two weeks! Embarassment Time.
