Default Found the "clunk" yesterday

My new '81 C3 has had a "clunk" when I put it into gear. I finally had a chance to climb under it yesterday. It seems that the transmission mount was only held to the transmission by one bolt. That bolt was a pracking self tapping screw! I hope that the rest of the car hasn't been Bubba'ed like this.

I had to jack up the transmission, loosen the transmission crossmember, move the exhaust system support bracket, and retap both of the bolt holes on the rear of the transmission. I feel so much better now that it's done right and no more "clunk" either.

Excellent . Always nice when you correct a problem. The nice thing about these old cars is we get to drive them between repairs

Could use a helicoil as well. When done correctly, they are a very solid and acceptable way of repairing threads.

Glad you found your clunk!

Good job, I had the dreaded clunk for years. It scared the crap out of my friends anytime they were in the car.

Clunk-a-chunks = no bueno.

Glad you found the culprit and restored a peace of mind, as well.

Mine was a fragmented pinion snubber bushing in the frame mount. Sure is a lot more quiet and comfortable now that it's been replaced.

If you posted before about a clunk when put into gear I musta misted it. I had the same exact problem and result with an 81 Camaro Z28. I could have helped but I missed it.

Awesome! yeah, it's great when you fix something, especially when it's easy.

Ya know, some people throw the term "Bubba" around in situations where I don't really think it applies. Like if someone uses a little rtv on a valve cover gasket to fix an oil leak, it's "Bubba stikes again!!!", But man, a self tapping bolt holding the transmission in? That's bubba!!!

Keep the shiny side up!
