My 1981 Vette is gloss black, with flat black rocker moldings. I've been toying with the idea of painting the rockers with Dupont's Black Chrome Spray paint. Does anyone have experience with this paint? Should I strip them down to bare metal before I start? Or should I lightly sand them and spray away? Any picture you have would be great!
Don't sand the rocker panels. It will remove the anodized layer that provides it with corrosion resistance and durability against road rash. Just use some #0000 steel wool, and stroke it only in the front/back direction. Then, use a good cleaner (lacquer thinner, etc.) to clean the surface before you paint. Since the panels are anodized, using a 'bare metal' primer is not needed...but you can if you want.
My 02....You will do the same damage with steel wool or sanding. I painted the trim on my 81 with SEM Trim black, the trim that I lightly glass beaded came out much better!
I would be more concerned with the Product's suggested surface preparation is? Then decide for your self.
Not sure what the Dupont black chrome paint is, but both Dupli-Color and Rust-Oleum make two part black chrome wheel kits, that are really just a smoke tint/clear top coat intended to just knock down bling a bit of already bright chromed wheels. The others seem to have you covered on painting the rockers, as you're really wanting to use purpose made trim paint, such as SEM satin trim, rather than off the shelf Krylon. This stuff really bites into the surface, but really stinks when drying too, so you're not wanting to do this in the basement.
