The exhausts on my car are popping (again), very noticeable at idle. I am sure the car is running to lean particularly in the very low speed range as I continually have a flat spot after about half an inch of throttle travel no matter what speed or load and which almost disappears as the car gets hotter. Is there a connection between fuel mix and popping. The carby is a holley street avenger 570 and the cam is mild and without modification to the carby we seem to have maxed out on a richer mix?
try a search for lars paper on tuning. if that don't work you may need a larger carb. if the popping is at idle try turning your idle screws out 1/2 turn to start with.
I had a after fire problem a few months ago my car was popping at idle out of the right side. It can be caused by an exhaust leak or even a vacuum leak. In my case it was a fowled plug allowing un-burnt fuel into the exhaust pipes and then the hot exhaust igniting there.
It could be a few things. Sometimes a weak ignition will cause this as stated earlier. Sometimes timing that's too far advanced. You can always rejet your carb or adjust the idle mixture if needed.
my bet....timing issue, check all other stuff as people say, but carb size shouldnt be an issue, adjust carb as well fatten it up see if that does the trick
make sure car is timed right, distributor in right etc

Thanks for the feedback I think the car needs to go to a full tune shop given the possibilities suggested and looks like the carby may be too small as we have maxed out the richer idle mix option.
