Default Flowmaster 40's...

My local custom exhaust shop told me they have a flowmaster 40 or I could go with a off brand. They tell me put them side by side and listen to the sound of the finished product that I would know a difference. The off brands are $100.00 cheaper though. I have always loved flowmasters and wanted to go with the 40's. Has anyone heard of or went with the off brand and if so how are they, do you like them.

2nd is the 44's any nicer or louder? They will be put on my 72 sb stock vert. Thanks!

I can’t say for on a corvette as I was running the 50 series before I went to the sidepipes but I have the 44s on my 02 grand Cherokee. I wouldn’t say that they are all that "loud" as they are deep but take it with a grain of salt because I dont think that the 2.5inch maxflow inserts in my sidepipes are all that loud. The only objection I have the muffler is that it lost its finish very quickly so I had to pull it off to do a high temp paint on it but that’s not a big deal. I would say if you could take off your cats off while you are under there do it

I would love to do side exhaust but I think it may be a bit out of the price range right now for me. On the 72 I don't think I have cats, do I?

i put flowmaster 40s on my 77 a couple months ago. they are loud and have a deep rumble. nothing crazy though. i paid $100 for the pair from summit racing.com. buy them there and then take them to your muffler shop. sounds like they are market them up pretty high if the knock offs are a $100 bucks cheaper.

Yeah they want $350 installed out the door. Or 260 OTD for the knock offs. I wish I had the loot for the side exhaust I love the look and sound of them!

I also have a 72 SB 350 with a 4 spd and plan to go with summit headers, 2.5 " pipe back through the flowmaster 40 series. I love the look of the side exhaust but it's not for me on my car.

I had Flowmaster 40's with true dual 2.5" out the rear before I went to sidepipes. They were loud and obnoxious. Terrible droan inside the car. Couldn't talk to your passenger. Gave you a headache from the noise on any drive longer than 30 minutes. I've run 50's on previous cars with no issue though. I'd never run 40's again.

My Hookers with STS baffles are more mellow.

Just my $.02.

Go with 50's or something else.

Go with some Magnaflows, that is if you want the most power. They are straight flow design.

I have a stock '77 and I put on patriot headers and bought the exhaust kit from summit. That kit comes with manga flows and frankly I didn't like them much. They just didn't 'rumble'. I went to Kenny's here in the Dallas metro plex and he talked me into flowmaster 44s. He said they are quite during cruzing speed, but have that rumble when you hit the gas.
He was right and I love them! I got the black paint to help conceal the exhaust which I really like too. He put on modern chrome vette tips, made them stick out 1.5" and I think it looks great! Go with flowmasters - there's a reason they are #1...

Flowmaster Series 40, Hooker Headers, True Dual 2.5'' pipes w/balance pipe, '73 sb. Sounds better in person, took this with a point and shoot camera, but might give you an idea of what it would sound like.

Flowmaster also makes a 40 Series Delta Flow muffler that has virtually no drone. I wished they'd do a better job of marketing these, cause no one seems know they exist. I have them on my 71 454 and they sound great. And have no interior drone.

That is a nice sound! Is the only difference between the 40 series and delta flow the drone?

I have 40's on mine. They sound good, drone is loud around the 1200-2000rpm mark. I have a th350 trans with 3.55's inthe rear so I never hit the drone rpms on the 60+mph hwy speeds.

Here's a video, in car and out shots.

same here with the 40's.drone,rich deep sound and plenty the attention getter.from electronics class it took way more energy to make a low frequency sound than a high frequency one.that could explain the loss of hp compared to magnaflows.so they say, but the sound is what it's all about.

I think there is one extra rib inside the Delta Flow. Not sure if there is difference in flow. Doesn't really matter on my car.

Found this, I guess it explains it.
