Default Here we go again......

I was going to finish installing the stereo this A.M. but, when I started the 73 to back it up, to get to it....she started SCREAMING at me..
I knew it was the power steering belt...so I thought well, I'll just tighten it up (won't take long, can't be too hard) yeah, right! Had to take the alternator off to get to the lid of the power steering pump so I could check and refill with fluid....wow..... Dude, I jacked up the car, crawl my cripple butt under it and the hose is split and leaking.... Ok, lots of hose I'll cut off the bad part and reconnect.....(can't be too hard, won't take too long) yeah, right again.....Well, I finally got the hose cut off and reconnected (twice, it split the first try).....tightened the A-frame bushings while I was there, they were loose.....got the power steering pump tightened up and then had to jack and tweek with the brackets for the alternator so I could get the dang bolt back in it.......whew...got er done.. all that to tighten a belt!

Hi 73corvette.
Sorry it was a PITA for you, but thats what these cars do sometimes.
If I read your story correctly, you said you tightend up your control bushings (A-frame bushings) with the car jacked up, with the tires not on the ground?
If this is the case, the control arm bushings are supposed to be tightened up with the car on the ground at ride height. This way the bushing rubbers will not be torqued or streached out causing the rubbers to ware out prematurely. Just trying to give you a heads up.

The tires were in the air.....they were finger loose....don't know why they hadn't fallen out....the bolts in the bushings that is...I guess it's not really in the bushing its in the control arm that the bushing protects...

I think once initial mock up was done, the engineers should have been made to perform basic maintenance checks, such as checking power steering fluid, before production got the OK. Sometimes I shake my head at the logic of it all. I realize they were designed more for ease of manufacture than ease of maintenance.....but...................so metimes I just shake my head.
