Default How many Do NOT....

How many of you do NOT carry a spare tire? I just took my spare down for the first time in a LONG time, its FLAT. Plus, it's one of those "fake" tires. I was think about leaving it and the carrier off the car. Loose some weight. What do you guys think?

I only carry my cell phone and insurance card with the roadside assistance #.

Spare hangs on the garage wall.

Mine is in the shed as something that once was!

Probably a different story if I ever went road-trippin but for the most part I just do local jaunts.

No spare so far - decision is still "open" though.

I did not get a spare with mine but bought one from a 1980 that is one of the 50 mph poly crap ones. I leave it on there since it is also part of the cushioning from a rear end accident system. However, I would never put it on the ground and have two cans of the self sealing stuff to get me to where a regular tire could be plugged or replaced. Why worry? You sit way back towards the back in my 76 and I don't have enough horsepower for that 50-75 pounds to make a difference. Might as well be conservative but I don't count on using it to replace a flat tire, ever.

I've heard the "crash protection" theory several times... Have you ever looked under there? Seen where that tire is going to slide...?? Right under the car... The plactic tub is held on by the smallest of bolts.... I just don't see the "protection" ....

Thanks guys, I will be leaving my spare in the shed from now on and get a can of "Fix-A-Flat" tomorrow. I only drive local anyway so it's really not needed, plus it makes it a lot easier to check the rear end fluid without all the crap under there. Well, thanks again and have a great weekend.

Default So many ways..

There are so many ways in a vette to buy it that I just don't mind having any pneumatic thing between me and the clown behind me. I think the biggest safety thing you have in a vette is the fairly substantial steel box frame on the c2 and c3. Don't know about subsequent vettes.

If you don't want a spare on there just buy a couple cans of the aerosol self sealing stuff and take it off. Many do.

We didn't get a spare or the tire carrier with the car. I think the PO threw it all away because "he didn't need it" as he put it. Same with the original steering wheel and many other parts.

The areas under the car where the carrier bolts to were clean. It looked like it was just removed before we got the car. Oh well. I like the fix a flat and compressor idea. That's my next purchase from the parts store.

Insurance card, cell phone and a business card from a top notch towing co. here that specializes in collectable car towing.

Adam

EDIT: FYI - Slime brand sealant is not a good idea for aluminum rims. Unless your wheels are powder coated, it will eat away the aluminum. Something I learned back in my ATV days and saw first hand results of using it. It sort of blobs up in places on the rim and started to eat at the aluminum.

Cell Phone, Spare Prepaid Phone, $300 Cash, Tripple A Card, Road Side Flares, Crackers, First Aid kit and duct tape. That's all I need for an emergency.

No spare or carrier.
12 volt compressor, tire plug kit, and a can of Fix A Flat as a last resort before using the cell phone.

No spare, the carrier is the cover for my sumped fuel tank, filter, shut off valve, and electric fuel pump + a SLIME kit that has a compressor, plugs, & the green goo.

Even my new Caddy CTS didn't come with a spare, just a compressor kit.

There is a spare in there but it's the wrong size and I would probably almost never use it... I don't carry a jack in the vette.

I like having a spare tire. I don't understand not wanting to have one.

I was just reading that someone got a flat on their Nissan Leaf () and used the supplied sealant and compressor. Worked fine. Took the car to the dealership. They fixed the leak and cleaned out the tire for the owner.

The owner asked to replace the can of "Nissan Certified Sealer" and was quoted $200 $660 plus for the whole kit with compressor.

Use anything but that sealant and it voids your warranty because of tire pressure sensors and such.
