I was just reading that someone got a flat on their Nissan Leaf () and used the supplied sealant and compressor. Worked fine. Took the car to the dealership. They fixed the leak and cleaned out the tire for the owner.
The owner asked to replace the can of "Nissan Certified Sealer" and was quoted $200 $660 plus for the whole kit with compressor.
Use anything but that sealant and it voids your warranty because of tire pressure sensors and such.
I wish someone would manufacture a replacement Y frame. The rest of the car is clean, but that carrier isn't worth saving. If I could get a repro, I'd carry my spare.
I have the original spare tire [unused] still in the spare tub and it has a modest amount of air in it. My primary 'repair' method is to call Hagerty and have a flatbed pick up the car and drop it at the nearest tire shop. But, my AAA coverage is backup #1; cell phone is backup #2; and, if all else fails, I can put the spare on a wheel and limp to a shop as a last resort.
I had my vette on the road 2 days and had a blowout THREE MILES from my house. I dont have a spare. It took the tow truck 1.5 hours to get to me, and we had to swindle AAA because they didnt want to honor my Moms AAA card. (She was on scene with me, but they gave her flak) The AAA driver was brutal on the hookup and scared me to death when he unloaded the car.
Once I get back home from my current deploment and start working on the car again, Im going to try and find a donut or a mini, anything that will at least let me roll home under my own power.
Have you ever seen the car chases on TV ....??? Those folks drive at high speed for sometimes 100 miles on the rims ...We even had a hijacked "18 wheeler" run almost 100 miles on the rims.... Grooves are still in the highways around DFW ...
Sorry, but this thread makes me chuckle. Some get rid of the carrier, spare tire, jack, etc to save weight and then all they do is drive to local events, car shows, etc. I've seen oldies "lead sleds" that don't care about stripping every last ounce - some even have spares!
Personally I refuse to wait for hours to get a flat changed, or a tow, so I can go on my way. I'm still capable of changing a flat tire.
I removed my spare tire about 2 weeks ago after carrying it around for decades and never using it.
I thought that the tub would be prone to bouncing around without the weight of the wheel/tire holding it down. So I cut a 4" length of 1" aluminum square tubing and placed it around the rear mounting bolt...nice and solid and still gives the OEM look.
I kept mine. I check the pressure once a year. It is part of the crash absorption system. I also keep my cell phone with me and my AAA card...and jumper cables...and some tools....and some belts.
I'd like to see some documentation on this. I believe it's an old wives tale. Has anyone ever looked under the car to see where the spare would go if rear ended? Not to mention it's held on by 3 hanging loose bolts...
I don't believe it offers any protection.
You've got a full frame back there for that purpose.

Dissipation of energy is what you want in a accident. You want parts coming off or crumpling up. Not taking a impact and transmitting energy to other parts of the car

Not to mention that 40% of Americans are obese....
Any 'performance gains' from losing the tire are lost as soon as you have a passenger.....
I just restored my tire tub to original and have the original spare tire , with air !!
I don't go very far , local trips and i'm not out to set any new land speed records so getting rid of it didn't make sense in my case.
I keep a full size (225/70/15) on one of the old Centerline wheels that were on the car when i got it. i really prefer not to have to trust a space saver spare.
