Interior work on the 82 started....need some answers.....

Anyway started the interior work on the 82, and as you look over the pics, I am just curious
as to whether there has been some additional insulation added when the carpets were replaced.
In the 2nd pic, there looks like part of heat insulation in the area right under the seat, was this factory?
In pic 6, you can see it attached to the underside of the carpet.
In pic 7 & 8 it also looks like someone added home carpet padding to the factory padding, there
just seems to be to much there.
In pics 3,4 & 5, the floor looks really good and there is the shot of the lower bird cage, which
is intack.
Opinions and comments welcome........thanks.....
Getting ready to clean the floor, and measure for the Reflectix material to go down.
Also ordered and received the kit for the heater box, etc., going to pull the dash pad, replace the
heater core, speedometer cables and the cruise transducer. Then on to the AC...It's a busy weekend...
And a Happy & Safe Memorial Day Weekend to all, let us remember all who have served and lost their lives
for our country and us.........

Birdcage area on this side looks just as good as on the other side.
I will probably lay the Reflectix down over the padding that is already on the driver's side, as it is in there quite nicely, no need to disturb.
Now on to the dash pad.........

found an easier way to disconnect the speedo and tach cluster, take the driver's side radio speaker out and if your hand is small enough, it fits right down and you can disconnect everything no problem, no need to lay on the floor again...will be the same to install....

also took out the transducer, easiest way was to take out the fromt fender vent and remove from there......

have a question......in the next pic the resume solenoid is on tthe LS of the transducer, there is an electrical connection and a port. Does this port go to anything, or is it a filter or vent port. When I disconnected a few weeks ago, it had a piece of foam in there and wasn't connected to anything. Looked in the AIM and Service Manual, but doesn't seem to address this issue. any thoughts????? thanks.....Tom

Have remanufactured transducer ready to go in, with replacement cables, getting there slow but sure.......

In the pic below, there is a space betwen the lower duck and the defroster duct, is this the way it should be? when I took apart the 74, can't remember, although hopefully I took pics of that to.
The other pics show the duct work all cleaned up, as there was a ton of dust on the outside and inside of these items, as seen in pics above. I know the car is 30 years old, but it was really heavy, I am sure when the car got repainted, it probably contributed to the additional dust. washed the inside and outside, used a long thin bladed screwdriver with a microfiber cloth to get into the curves on the inside. now I have clean duct work, parts still look new....
back to the garage, can't accomplish everything I wanted to do this weekend, so will lay down the insulation on the driver's side, hook up the wiper and headlight switches (not putting the dash back in today) and the steering wheel back on to be ready to drive.....

Driver's side just about done....still have to add some more material up higher on the
firewall, may have to wait untill next weekend.....
the materials and tool used.......

now to put the carpet, seat and steering wheel back in time for work tomorrow.......

Also a big thanks to my buddy Ed, who doesn't own a Vette, but enjoys helping out when he can. He was over yesterday and assisted with the dash and transducer removal and other items. He is good with electric and that saves me big time...so as usual....thanks Ed......

when I first got the 82, I had issues with starting the car with the steering wheel in different positions, was getting ready to perform the testing recommended by forum members to determine what could be the cause, ignition switch or the cylinder (key switch). So we proceeded to check out the situation and possibly change out what would be needed to do. We checked the rod, and that was free moving, no binding in any wheel position. Checked the ignition switch by making sure all connections were tight, as the switch we had was the wrong configuration, so we couldn't have changed it out anyway.
Decided that other things needed to be done, and would do more here in the future.
So when I put everything back together today, I changed out the horn shims, as mine had some rust on them (also had a horn problem) and I noticed that inside the horn cap, there were tabs that were bent where they shouldn't have. So fixed that, hooked up the battery and now the horn blows instantly, no matter where you touch the horn button, that didn't happen before. Then I go to start the engine and it starts with the wheel in a different position that it has before. I always had to hold the Tilt wheel down in the lowest position and apply pressure to start. I tried all different positions this afternoon and it now starts in all positions, so we must have done something that has made a better connection, maybe applying pressure at the ignition switch did it, who knows, but it works properly now....

While I didn't accomplish everything I set out to do this weekend, (I always think I'm going to do more than I can)

I made progress and some items got fixed along the way.....

progress we made:
1-did not have interior lights when opening the door, found that the delay timer is toast, jumped the 2 white wires for now and interior lights work fine. have to order delay timer....
2-checked out the passenger side storage area and found all relays just laying on the floor. reattached wiper relay, antenna relay back to the bulk head area where they belong. there is another "relay" that seems to belong on the battery side, it's just there, have to determine what it is and if it attaches anywhere.
3-after doing research on the heater core shutoff valve, found that the temperature cable wasn't adjusted properly and not shutting off the switch located at the top of the heater box inside the car. made an adjustment, so we shall see if it makes a difference. also purchase a 3/4" ball valve to install just in case, may be overkill, so we shall see.
4-layed down the insulation on the passenger side, will just put carpet in place, and see if all of these tasks keep out the heat, will find out this week.
5-found out why I was having trouble with starting the 82 with the T&T wheel in different positions. it seems that the rod is the problem, when I go to start the engine and get nothing, if I pull on the rod with slight pressure, it starts. but since I have the dash out, I just may change out everything related and not have to worry about it again.....
getting there slow but sure, but getting there.......

here is a list of what was done, with plenty of pics......
1-cleaned up heater & heater core boxes
2-replaced heater core & heater hoses
3-reinstalled heater box and some duct work
4-replaced water pump with new unit, not rebuilt (for a great price) & thermostat with 180 unit instead of 195 unit
5-replaced A/C compressor
6-replaced RS valve cover gasket, (leaking bad)
7-replaced antifreeze with 5yr, 150,000 mile product
8-replaced spark plugs, 5 of the old ones were only in there hand tight if that, they were loose, go figure!!!
9-replaced dist cap & rotor with MSD replacement parts
10-checked under ignition module and it was bone dry, so coated with thermal compound, all is well now
11-changed oil & filter, used Castrol Syn 5w-50 for classic cars and increased zinc levels
12-lubed chassis with Mobil 1 grease, they were kind of dry as some joints needed 8 to 10 pumps to get the grease in
13-only item I did not accomplish was to install the A/C belt, as I couldn't get to the other PS bolt to loosen & remove that belt, that will have to wait for another day.
as far as parts went, some of the local parts stores offered great coupons and I took advantage of those: $25 off purchase of $100 or more
nice sale on the Castrol Edge Syn oil & filter for $34
couldn't pass up those prices.
results......engine runs much better with tune-up, and 180 thermostat. no heat soak problems with starter on restarts in hot weather.
also cabin is way cooler with insulation and shut off valve working properly, no more hot heat down in the footwells, I don't feel
that there is a need to insulate the rear cargo area, but that is a matter of choice.
just need to get the A/C going.....

1-A/C system is now operational, replaced some parts and charged the system, minor adjustments needed.
2-redid center gauge cluster with new piece. checked out electrical operation of everything and all was within specs. very unhappy with the replacement lens plate for the gauges, as when you look at it at a certain angle, the plastic is cloudly. but from the driver's view, it should be ok. original lens from the 82 is clearer, but scratched.
3-lost my lock key for my wheel locks, finally got the locks off, what a relief!!!!
4-upgraded speedo to 140 mph face, can't wait to get it back in the car....
5-also got the rear sway bar hooked up with new bushings and brackets. what a PIA to remove the old sleeve from the sway bar and then press in the new bushings with bar still on the car. got it done and it feels good.
still more to do, will be happy to get the dash pad and gauges back in, hopefully soon.....enjoy the 4th and be safe......
BTW....repeating myself, but the best thing I have done so far is to insulate the floor and made sure that the shut-off valve for the heater core was working correctly, with this weeks hot temps and
even though I am making some adjustments on the A/C, it feels great not to have any heat come in the footwells at all, it was worth the effort to do....

I chuckled when you mentioned the cloudy gauge lens. Years ago, I replace it n my 81 and noticed the same thing. Turned out that it only obscured the view of the gauges when sitting in the driver's seat
I didn't particularly enjoy putting the original, scratched up one back in. You might want to make certain that yours doesn't have the same properties.

we kept looking at it from different angles and it was really noticable from the passenger view rather than the driver's view, so I lucked out....
just can't believe that the vendors would accept that type of workmanship and then sell it to their customers. I've had it for awhile and just opened it last Saturday to install, otherwise, I would have returned it and just kept looking. It does bother me though, I may have to just try polishing out the original and reuse......
The foam piece on that vacuum switch is a filter for incoming vent air. Since that piece is in the engine compartment area, it should be filtered so crud doesn't get sucked into that valve. Any piece of open-cell foam will do, I think. For verification, check that section of the AIM.
You look like you are doing a fine job and have everything well organized. Good luck with the project.

I did get rid of that cardboard when I laid down the insulation, it was shot.....
I already have a piece of foam for that valve on the resume switch, just didn't know if something was connected to it or not, had looked in the AIM, but could not find anything.
moving right along with everything, should have it completed soon....
