What would be the best paint to use on the tank? Eastwood’s gas tank tone is way off in my opinion. Any others out there that gets close to the original look?
I used rustoleum silver "hammer" texture. It looks natural and almost a factory look. It doesn't look like wanna be chrome. I used it on my 2000 f150 steel wheels, looks just right, not too flashy, looks like a factory finish.
I have painted a few tanks on the special cars I've owned.
I rebuilt a 66 GTO and painted the tank the color of the body, just because the tank was out and looked nasty before I cleaned it up. Painted the 2 side-by-side, so no extra work. No one knew it was painted unless I told them.
I had a 69 Camaro'a tank that I painted when I had the frame repaired and painted.
I painted the 75's new tank black, just because I had nothing else to do during the winter. Idle hands and all that....

They rot from the inside. No need to paint them. When you figure that they lasted about 40 years, unpainted from the factory, it is clear the new tank is likely to outlive you
Most gas tanks have either a galvanized or aluminized coating over the steel base material for rust protection. There are cold galvanized coatings available in spray cans (high zinc content) that do a good job of repairing scratches on a galvanized surface, but it does not look anything like the original finish.
Paints will not duplicate the original finish and sheen but will improve the looks if that is what you are after. Be aware most aluminum or "chrome" rattle can paints will not stand up to gasoline very well.
