Default Yeah, another fuel smell

4 weeks ago I replaced my carb, intake, dizzy cap & rotor, water pump, neck, timing cover & chain, plugs & wires, fuel filter. For approx 10 days everything ran fine.

Prior to these changes, the car would "bog" down or "sputter" when I moderately accelerated, if I didn't let it warm up for the first ride of the day.

For the last week I have experienced again the bog down and sputter, and occasionally out right stall when I initially go to drive and accelerate. After 10 minutes of easy driving the car appears fine, I can accelerate no problems, no bog down, no sputter, no stall.

Thursday night I also noticed a fuel smell after a few stops for errands. It's only on start up, right after the car turns over, and dissipates within 10 seconds. I looked for leaking fuel and found none and I don't smell fuel when the car is parked.

I talked to my bud yesterday that's a mechanic, and he is leaning towards a new fuel pump. I through by him the possibility of the carb leaking down into the intake, he feels that isn't it.

Sorry for the length of the post, just trying to paint the best picture.

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance. Jedi

any moisture on the fuel pump, like its starting to leak? The fuel smell can be anything from the fuel tank up to the carb, to the canister with the charcoal in it, or any rubber hose having to connect it. The sock in the tank could be clogged, pinched fuel line down at the fuel pump(the "s" shaped on has to be a molded one). Have you done any other changes to the car which might have some effect on it?? Hesitation could be timing? Vacuum going to dissy hooked up correctly? is the motor stock or modified? Need more about car to really help any more. What carb did you replace?(stock or what) and what did you replace it with??

I went through the same problem recently. I could smell fuel but could never find any leaking. Once after parking on the grass I noticed some dead grass and still never found the leak but I knew there was one. Finally one day after sitting covered for a few days, I noticed my gas tank was empty. I added gas then noticed a huge amount of gas coming out of the fuel pump. Changed the pump and not only is the gas smell gone, my fuel mileage has gone up. It's no telling how long the leak had gone on and just got worse and worse. Good luck in your hunt.

No moisture on the fuel pump that I can see or feel. I don't smell at the carb. The 2 rubber hoses going from the fuel lines to the fuel pump are old and cracked however not leaking. I am replacing them. I was up close and personal with the fuel tank last weekend and could not smell fuel. I was under the car right behind the fr pasgr tire and couldn't smell fuel. When I park, I observe under the car if there are any spots and when I come back I check again, no spots, no fuel, no fuel smell. Also, no fuel sheen on the wet pavement.

Engine is stock 350 auto
New cap & rotor on dizzy
New timing tab
New Edelbrock 600cfm carb w/ electric choke
New Edelbrock performer intake

I have crawled under and in looked and sniffed and can't see or smell fuel. The smell is only on start up and lasts approx 10 secs. No smell on shutdown or after the car has been sitting awhile after shutdown. BTW, my gas mileage has stayed pretty true too.

My bud can't replicate the bogging down and can't smell fuel. Like I said, after 10 secs the fuel smell is gone and after driving 10 mins no bogging down or sputtering and is fine at stop lights etc when idling.

Frustrating. I have been looking through the service manual today (can't work outside today it's pouring and I have no garage) trying to pick up on something that may give me a lead. If it's not raining tomorrow then I'm back in and under the car.

Thanks for the help guys, I appreciate it. Jedi

Just filled the tank yesterday, no leak or smell.

After ruling out leaks, that's what I was leaning towards. I have to talk to my bud on Tuesday. As of tomorrow I'm down to 1 arm for at least 3 months so I want to button this up and be done for the rest of the summer.

I'm not totally convinced it's the pump, after a 5-10 mins of driving no sputter or bog down, and no fuel smell.

If it were the pump wouldn't I have problems driving consistently?
