Default Horn contact

Hi Guys,
I need some advice again , this time regarding the horn contact switch on my 73 .
The horn kept sounding off every now and then for no reason and i suspected the contact switch as being faulty , sure enough removal of the horn button revealed broken plastic locators and a rusty switch .

I must say at this point that the column is a non tilt version unit : I ordered the replacement from the supplier and it came in a packet marked non tilt contact and i fitted it . As soon as i put on the ignition the horn sounded , i took off the button again and took a look , the inner metal section was touching the nut that holds on the steering wheel .

When i compared the diameter of the holes of the metal plate the new one was smaller in diameter than the old one i removed hence it was shorting out and sounding the horn .

I contacted the supplier and they are adamant that the correct part and number has been supplied , so can anyone advise if they have come across this problem before , is it the wrong part in the correct package ? i dont believe that the column has been altered , but where would i locate a horn contact with a larger diameter hole that will clear the steering wheel retaining nut ? i cant pick up any sizes or information from any of the suppliers catalogs .

Does anybody know of the correct part number of the horn contact switch with the larger diameter hole that will clear the steering wheel locating nut .

Thanks guys ,

John

Send a PM to Jim_Shea. He is the 'resident expert' on C3 steering systems and has all the detail information on them.

Corvettefaq .com has a bunch of Jim's papers on it and you may be able to land a good diagram there.

I have not been inside a non-tilt column so am not too familiar with what the parts look like. On my tilt column the upper contact is in no danger of hitting the nut but I'm sure that's a completely different beast.

I know that you want the right part from the getgo, but would it be possible to ream the hole in the contact in order to clear the nut?

Hi Shark Racer,

Thanks a stack for the input , i have no idea why there is such a difference but the part i was supplied as correct is about 3.5 mm smaller than the original on the hole diameter .

I looked at just using a reamer and opening it up to clear the nut , but that is not possible because the little plastic pins are so close to the edge of the ring i would not be able to ream enough out of it to get it to clear the nut .

I hope that Jim can put me on the right track on this one , its very strange .

Thanks for the help anyway

Please see my post in this section regarding your problem.

http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c3-g...t-problem.html

I wish that people would not send me Private Messages and/or Visitor Messages then post the same question on the Forum. I usually go directly to the PMs then later visit the Tech and General areas. Now I find that I have already answered the same question.

Jim
