Default 69 Temp gauge

Hi all
need some help with my temp gauge
on start up (cold) the gauge goes to just past 210, the stat opens(160)
and goes back down to the mark between 100 and 210 and stay there the whole drive.

i noted today that a few days after a drive the gauge sits where it was before i turned the engine off (mark between 100 and 210) if i turn the key the gauge drops just under the 100 and starts to do its thing.

cheers
guys

What your gauge is doing when you shut it off (sitting in it's last position when running) is normal operation. What it's doing when you turn it on is not normal. I would suspect a bad ground. You may also want to check the connection at the sender. That non designated mark that it sits on when driving is 180.

Thank for you reply
It's a relief that the way it behaving is normal after turning it off.
I took a reading with a temp gun at the thrmostat housing and it read 85 deg c
So this means the temp is ok???

Cheers
Mate

I think you have a bad thermostat. The gauge appears to be functioning as it should; but the temp should not go that high before the stat opens up. I would say that the stat is 'sticky' and staying closed too long before it finally opens. The next stage of stat failure is that it won't open at all. Change it out.

He said the gauge goes to 210 ON START UP. I would agree with you if he had said reaches 210 after running a while before it settles down. Maybe he can clarify.

first off thanks you guys for your input

ok on start up (cold) the gauge will climb up past 210 and if i just go for a short drive around the block, the gauge would then drop and wouldn't move, if i start it and let it warm up for a while then hit the freeway the gauge goes past 210 and i have to stop on the side and let it idle and watch the gauge drop, then i can drive off and no issues.
i have a hi flow water pump and a brand new thermostat 160 only 3 weeks old.
the car is an original 98 thous miles, 1969 350/300 with a T400 auto
this is on the freeway (the amp gauge has been replaced since)

this photo is when i turned off the engine (where it sits)

cheers guys

All of my gauges return to zero when I turn the key off. The Clock never moves.

My Temp gauge starts at left side rest on start up and slowly climbs to between the 1st hash mark and 210* (180* thermostat), and stays there unless I am stuck in really heavy traffic with the A/C on. I have seen it as high as just above 210*. Barely.

Why the hi-flow water pump? It could be cavitating and creating bubbles in the water jacket.

I agree with capevettes about looking for a bad ground. Curious that your Amp gauge was malfunctioning at the same.

That Oil Pressure... 70psi when it's HOT?

the original water pump was leaking so i opted for the hi flow.
it used to do the same with the old pump as well.

the oil gauge is like this as it always high this is when the motor is warming up and then sits on just above the 70 mark on the freeway running at 100ks
i did note that when i replaced the amp gauge there were air locks in the oil line (engine off)

the amp gauge was replaced at the time of the photo with the temp gauge at rest

There's no way that reading is correct. 60-something when it's stone cold maybe. More like 35/40 at speed hot.
Bleed the line where it connects to the back of the gauge next time you're in there. It can be messy. Lots of rags and cover up the top of your radio.
