Drivers Mirror
stiffener plate that runs almost the full length of the door which blocks
your view. No idea what year yours is or whether it's a coupe or vert.

Actually I was thinking there is a place in the upper bar that shows location.
You could try a magnet from outside.

Remember: early 68s had the mirror forward on the door; late 68 moved it back to what became the standard location.
Who wants to guess???

Just went through this putting the passenger side mirror on the '76. Be sure to drill the holes smaller and use WD40 or Vaseline to get the well nut in the fiberglass. The well nut acts like a wall anchor and expands as you screw the exterior mirror plate onto the door. If you drill it too big, the well nut will not work and you will have to use larger well nuts and screws.

Reverse your right side template, make some marks, check it against the above drawings,if it looks right drill small holes.
Hopefully you'll hit the tapping plate,I'm not a fan of the well nuts, seen too many mirrors vibrate using the well nuts.
You can always install your own tapping plate so you get a solidly mounted mirror.
I would also look at the base of item #3 (bracket),if it doesn't conform to the door contour, grind it so it does. Most of the brackets are too sharp, don't conform to the door and cut the base gasket in two and the mirror becomes loose.
Grinding the base a little thinner also provides a way to tighten many loose mirrors, this allows item #2 (screw) to do its job and wedge the mirror base against the door surface making it tight.
