My drivers door mirror holes were glassed over by bubba, I have no idea how to find them from the inside. Is there any way to loacte them from inside the door?

I've got a 69 vert and there's no way you can tell as there is a steel
stiffener plate that runs almost the full length of the door which blocks
your view. No idea what year yours is or whether it's a coupe or vert.

remove the passenger side mirror, measure from the front edge of the door back and the top edge down to the holes, then transfer those measurements to the other side? should get close

No. Use Google > Images and your model year. You should scare up pics of the stock mirror location. Use those to eyeball placement of your mirror.

Just reinstall it using Well-nuts. They are rubber inserts with metal threaded members cast inside them. Drill the body panel for the Well-nuts, install mirror and it all locks in place as the mounting bolts get torqued. You can find them at Fastenall or other fastener supplier. This is exactly how the dealers installed the right-side mirrors.

WHAT ? The AIM doesn't show where it goes ?

Actually I was thinking there is a place in the upper bar that shows location.

I'm pretty sure there is a metal plate that the mirror screws go into that was factory installed. I would think you could see it or feel it from inside,if nothing else you should be able to see filler used to plug the holes.
You could try a magnet from outside.

Yes. It's in the AIM, but dimensions for the actual placement are not given.

The tapping plate should still be in place on the inside surface of the door.

78 AIM page is helpful. It gives dimensions.

Well, it gives the distance from the top edge of the door to the holes....and it gives the distance between the holes....but it doesn't give a lateral dimension from the front edge of the door to the first hole.

Who wants to guess???

Guys I have looked inside as best I can with a small telescoping mirror with no luck what I do have is the paper template that came with the right side mirror but the holes are already there for it. What I am thinking about is reversing the right side template and using it on the left side door. what do you guys think. Thanks Skip

I think that's a superb idea. But drill the first hole smaller. Then, maybe you can see the original hole in the plate below and get it "on the money" with a minor shift in position for the correctly sized hole. Worth a try, anyway.

Just went through this putting the passenger side mirror on the '76. Be sure to drill the holes smaller and use WD40 or Vaseline to get the well nut in the fiberglass. The well nut acts like a wall anchor and expands as you screw the exterior mirror plate onto the door. If you drill it too big, the well nut will not work and you will have to use larger well nuts and screws.

Sure wish I had a car here,I would give you the missing lateral measurement.

Reverse your right side template, make some marks, check it against the above drawings,if it looks right drill small holes.
Hopefully you'll hit the tapping plate,I'm not a fan of the well nuts, seen too many mirrors vibrate using the well nuts.
You can always install your own tapping plate so you get a solidly mounted mirror.

I would also look at the base of item #3 (bracket),if it doesn't conform to the door contour, grind it so it does. Most of the brackets are too sharp, don't conform to the door and cut the base gasket in two and the mirror becomes loose.
Grinding the base a little thinner also provides a way to tighten many loose mirrors, this allows item #2 (screw) to do its job and wedge the mirror base against the door surface making it tight.
