Default Unidentified Part Leaking Coolant

Our 1976 vette is having a bit of a leaking problem, unfortunately we don't exactly know what the part is that's leaking. Correction: we don't know what the part is called. We've identified the leak (and it is a rather substantial leak that almost could be considered a stream) which is becoming more and more annoying (and potentially threatening) to the health of our baby. If anyone here could provide the name for the part below (we've tried looking at the Haynes manual with no success for a positive ID on this part) it would be greatly appreciated! Hope all is well with the forums and that you're all having fun driving this summer!

I believe that is your heater valve. When not in use it closes off coolant to the heater core.

The part I posted and the part linked look slightly different. Just an advancement in modern technology?

Toss the Haynes (or use it for bird cage liner) manual and get the AIM for your year. If you need repair manuals, get GM service manuals for your year.

To the OP. Your part that is pictured is more like a FORD item. Does the same as previously mentioned. Someone just used a similar part. I have replaced the same part on a '69 429 LTD. mike...

This is what mine looks like, '77.

GM had one that looks like yours also.

or you can go to Autozone today and get part #74612 $14.00 and make the change in 1/2 hour. Thus you save on price, shipping & waiting. I bought one about 5 years ago because I didnt want to pay $50 for one that looks original. Just needed to function.

Okay, definitely the part! Next question: what degree of difficulty are we looking at for replacing it? I suspect a ton of radiator coolant will come spilling out, but will that be it?

If your hoses are in good shape, LIGHTLY clamp each side with vise grips, just about zero coolant loss, done in 10 minutes.

If the hoses are old this would be the time to change them = longer than 10 minutes.
