Thanks for letting me know where the battery ground is located on my 74 C 3. I think I have isolated the problem to the battery. Ran ok, disconnected the negative terminal and she still ran. It used to be that if she continued to run the alternator was ok; but if she stalled, then teh alternator was defective. This still true? Also, the replacement batteries all show side mount cable mounts whereas mine (through the PO) has top posts. Any difference? Thanks guys. I appreciate your advice. Some good information from the forum.

You're really better off buying an inexpensive DVM for electrical trooubleshooting. Believe me, owning a C3 will require using it more than you can imagine so it's not a waste of money. You can also use it to measure current drain if your battery is going dead after a while.

If the alternator is working properly you should see ~14 volts at the battery with the engine running.

Top posts are no different from a battery function perspective. The side posts are safer - harder to drop a wrench or something across the terminals.

Also a $3 test light will be good investment,I use one of these for 95% of my electrical troubleshooting.
