I have a 1971 LT-1 Coupe that I purchased in January. I am finally getting around to some of the ticky tacky interior items that needed to be addressed. One was the battery compartment door not being attached. I bought a rear compartment screw kit from Zip and of course nothing really matches the screws or washers that are holding the other doors in place.
Question #1, of the pictures below with the larger headed screw and black washer installed, are these correct for a 1971?
#2 - if the larger headed screw and black washer IS correct, does anyone know where they can be purchased specifically? I have checked the usual culprits, Zip, Ecklers, etc., and have not found anything that definitively looks like that screw. I even searched web for "1971 rear compartment screw drawing", and various other ways and found no good lead.
Thank you in advance!
The pic of random screws is what came in the Zip rear compartment screw set by the way.
Do you have any reason to believe the screws in the other two doors have been replaced? Do they all appear to be the same in the other two doors? If so, take one and a related washer (if applicable) to any well stocked hardware store and see if you find a match in the nuts, bolts, screws aisle. A lot of these place have a size gauge you can use to determine length and pitch of your original.
The AIM shows the installation of the doors; it lists GM part numbers for the screws, but not the size. The Corvette Illustrations and Parts Guide will probably list the screw size but may not tell you the correct finish.
The NCRS Judging Guide might mention the correct finish.
If he doesn't amble by later, you could PM Alan Struck and ask what are on his '71.

So I went to the technical manual and judging guide for 70-72 Corvettes. On page 26 it states that the "lid/frame assembly mounts to the hinges via black-oxide, cross recess, round head machine screws with captive black oxide flat washers".
I believe what is already installed on the other compartment doors is correct from this description? If I feel comfortable what is already installed on the other compartment doors is correct from the feedback, I will take one to a store to find suitable matches.
...black-oxide, cross recess, round head machine screws with captive black oxide flat washers"...I believe what is already installed on the other compartment doors is correct from this description?...
Bingo. Looks like some black oxide in your pic, but what I see are flat head screws.

When you say flat head screws you are referring to the ones in the pic with loose hardware? The screws already installed on a door in the other pics appear to match the description IMO, no?
Hi TS,
Here are a couple of pictures showing the size of the original, (mid-January 71), door to frame screw, and frame to underbody screw.
Hope this helps.
Regards,
Alan
Easy Mike, They would have to be flat head screws or else they would hit the back part of the hinge when closed. I semi-restored my 68 about 1 year ago, after paint and body work. Most of the vender screws or especially "J" nuts are wrong in some way. Alot were similar but the thread pitch was wrong or the thread diameter was wrong. Or the head size or shape was wrong.
Same thing for the "tinnerman" speed nuts to hold the 68-69 front turn signal lamps. I could not hardly find one to fit the studs correctly. Most of the screws are being made in Asia, not on US machines.

Yes. The short black screws in your loose hardware pic look like flat head screws to me. They do not look like Alan's round head screw. My bad. I should have clarified which pic I was rambling on about.
