Default Engine code

I was cruising around looking at ads today and I came across this car. The number stamped on the engine struck me as odd seeing how the last few numbers aren't in line with the rest. Is this normal or a bad sign? The last picture is what I am talking about. http://www.usedcorvettesforsale.com/...tte-47363.html

I would not necessarily say it is a bad sign. I would be much more concerned if it were a big block or LT-1. It's a base model engine, which in my opinion, is less likely to be restamped (not that it never happens, just less likely). A couple other pictures would be in order to make a better judgement but to me, from that picture, it may be ok. I know some guys here really know their stamps and marks and have indicated in the past that errors in stamping did occur at the factory.

I don't like either stamp and would want to know the story behind each. A better quality pic would also help.

BOTH stamps have 'issues' and the bad pic doesn't help. There again the seller states that the car 'Has maching numbers'

yes it's a bad sign, but if the car is in good condition and is priced correctly, so what...

price it based on a questionable original engine.. therefor assume it is not.

no one spends the big bucks for a excellent passable stamp on a base engine. as a result they get what they pay for.

scenarios exist where the factory misstamped, but I wouldn't pay extra for a car where this MIGHT have happened.

Hi GV,
It would be interesting to see the VIN stamp on the transmission case since it was done at the same time.
Regards,
Alan

Hello, Alan- I have no intention to buy this car I was just checking it out. However, as you might have seen I'm in the market for a car and I have been trying to educate myself on all of these details. Where can the transmission stamp be found and is it visible if the car is on a lift?
