Default Identifying a car

My parents had a '79 when I was young, and I came across a matching car for sale in the area. I have the vin, but how can I find out if it's the same car?

You should be aware they made more '79s than any other year, before the C4s.

Are you saying you have the VIN to your parents' car, or to the FS car? If it's the parents' VIN, just compare it to the windshield post VIN on the FS car.

If you don't have the parents' VIN, it's gonna get a lot harder.

Ask your parents whether they have any documentation for their 79. All you need is an old record of some type with the VIN on it. Window sticker, license receipts, title, tax record, service record, insurance record, etc.

I have the vin for the FS car. My father passed away shortly after and I have no records, the dealership where the car was purchased was closed yeas ago.

you owned a car 25 years ago, tell me what its VIN was.....no way to find out, these are not public records you are asking about. if the docs are not available from the estate then there is no way short of hiring a private investigator and probably a 4 figure bill from him.

Perhaps daddy's insurance agent still has records with the VIN? Or an old state safety inspection bill stuck away in a drawer? Without knowing the VIN, you're screwed.

Would there be any internal records with GM on what dealership the car was originally sold to/from?

I'm not sure GM has the records, but you can order a build sheet for a '79 and it will tell you where the car was originally sold, but you still need the VIN to get that.

That will work. I can order a build sheet on the FS car and see if it came from the same dealership. Can you get a build sheet on a pre-BG plant car? If so, how?

It cost $50 per invoice though. That's a lot of money to spend on a shot in the dark. and even if it did come from the same dealer, there's still no way to know if it's the same car without the VIN

The Allied-Vaughn folks will need a VIN. If they have your VIN in their records, they charge $50 for a copy of the dealer invoice.

There is no charge if they do not have your VIN.
