Default build date??

Does any one know what the last day of production was for 1979, day and date??
My 79 has a paint pen date on the underside of the hood since new of 8/30/79. The angle
of the numbers looks like it was done after the hood was installed on the car.
Delivery date was 10/06/79 vin is 51315

Hi tb,
It looks like the last month of production was September 1979, and 3373 cars were produced that month.
Regards,
Alan

My serial is 451315 which is 2492 from the last one so it was built (or at least finished ) in Sept. The date under the hood is Aug. 30 so it may have been on the line or in the paint booth just as Sept. rolled over. It actually has several 1980 parts on it. Seat backs, door panels, and rear deck. You can tell by the location and shape of the antenna mounting hole and the way the carpet is finished off on the seat back.
One other strange thing are the compartment doors behind the seats. It has 3 rather than 2. This is referred to as early 79 in parts books
But it has never been touched or altered since new. color Lt. Blue / Dark blue leather

Your car was completed around Sept. 9th +/- a few days. What is on your trim tag?

My 79 was built "code N10" Sept. 10,1979 Something was being done to it Aug. 30 because of the paint pen date on the bottom side of the hood.

Hi Bob,
I believe the trim tag date is the date the car passed that 'station' on the production line.
The body would have been assembled and painted, including under hood/ engine compartment black-out, before that date.
10 days seem a little long, but isn't suprising.
Regards,
Alan

My 71 has a 'crayon' date and initials on the underside of the hood, but under the black-out. The date is Jan. 12, 1971. The car is a mid-January build, so the date of the body build is somewhat closer than yours.

Car completion date was probably Sept 11th or 12th. Seeing an Aug 30th date under the hood is not a surprise.

My black79, 51685, has a trim tag date 9-11 and build sheet date 9-12.
I believe only a few hundred 79s actually got the 2 door storage compartment. I've never seen one on a 79 myself.

I saw one just a couple weeks ago at the Sloan Auto Fair in Flint, Mich.

Correct.

The August date may be an inspector's mark. Your car would have been in paint September 9th or 10th, based on your time/build date.

In all likelihood, the last of the remaining 79 parts in stock at St. Louis. were being used as the end of the model year got closer.
