Default Does sidepipe angle affect exhaust smell?

I mounted the sidepipes with the tips angled towards the ground instead of horizontal like seen on most C3s. Do you think this is contributing to exhaust smell due to ground reflection?

That is a great question I say yes! Your car is beautiful! Do you smell it when driving down the road or just at slow traffic or stopped? If it is just a slow speeds an stopped I would say yes. If you smell it in the car at 60mph with the windows down it is a leak somewhere I would think the wind should push it back even if you did have ground deflection. Have you Checked under the car for leaks?

Well you will always have some smell but i would think pointing it down like that instead of away from the car wouldnt help. Did you adjust your carburetor after installing the exhaust?

Do you notice noise reflection/echo off the pavement and into the cabin?

No - I wouldn't think so- especially if you're moving.

Whether it goes out or down while stopped, I would think it would be about the same.

I could see how exhaust fumes could accumulate beneath the car if parked at a long light or something and find other ways into the cabin. When the tips are pointed to the side, they go "out there" and don't have the potential to accumulate and seep. With the engine fan pushing air beneath the car, the exhaust could be wrapping itself into the cabin through a variety of places.

This is amplified if you're running a smidge rich on idle.

My tips face out. My car "smells" in general. But I don't sense an abnormal amount of "exhaust smell" in the car.

So...yes. If you are having problems with exhaust fumes in the car and you don't have a VERY significant leak elsewhere in the system, the orientation of your tips would be the first thing I'd suspect.

I don't think the angle of your dangle is effecting exhaust smell.

My guess is your carb is running rich.
I get a bit of smell too, but nothing eye watering.

Thank you for the feedback. I should of stated I only smell exhaust when stopped. No leaks or ground noise. Also, I just pulled a few plugs and they had a nice light tan color.
I am pulling the pipes for repaint and am going to remount horizontally to see if it helps. I will update when done.

Thanks,

The factory side exhaust kinda exits at a downward angle like your pipes do, and I don't recall ever hearing anybody having an issue like yours, so I would think it's unlikely that it is the cause of your issue. If anything, I would think that it would help keep exhaust fumes down near the ground. Hard to say for sure, though, stranger things have happened.

Just thinking of you driving into a field with shiny custom painted cars and you giving them a good dusting as you idle past with your pipes aimed down.

But if someone complains do a burn out and pepper them with rock, that will shut them up about a little dust................ OUCH

BTW that black and white interior is rich....

And if they complain about the rocks, just pull your baseball bat out and start smashing windshields!

BTW, I like that interior, too!

Thanks Dean.

It's just the Stealshields that make the interior look so good.

Exhaust getting inside your car can be dangerous. I used to smell exhaust and was wondering why I was getting sleepy on long trips. My exhaust came out behind the rear wheels. Turned out I had an exhaust leak at the manifold. My 2 lil cents.

Default Dirty engine!

the smells come from the engine, to stop it clean the engine up with a engine analyzer that will detect the problems to be addressed.......where the exhaust is pointed is immaterial

Been driving a couple weeks now since turning the pipes and the exhaust smell is significantly less. Thanks for all the feedback!
