Default fitting doors

i have a 71 that years ago i tore all apart. the front is off ,the doors are off. now i want to put it together. when i hold the doors up, the door striker hold that side in position but when i put shims under the hinge bolts to position that end, how do i determine correct heighth with no fender to level off against. thanks ,i tried search but to no avail.

Hi b,
A 71, VERY nice.
Sorry, but you really can't fit the doors in any meaningful way with the front fenders off the car.
Perhaps you can measure from a point on the cowl, but I'd think even that dimension will vary from car to car.
When the body was built the doors were installed after the front clip was bonded to the cowl.
Today I believe people trial fit the front clip and hood, holding it with clamps, then trial fit the doors to make sure they can get the adjustment and gaps they want, and then go back to bonding the front clip.

Then the fender was cut down, sometimes quite crudely, to fit the door!

I agree with these guys, you got to have the front clip on to fit the oors. You can go ahead and hang them on and set them so the rear dor gap is more or less even and the door doesn't hang up on the post, but you will definately have to readjust them once you get the clip on.

It's because of C Sick's point that a door that fit very nicely on one car might not fit well at all on another.
