Default Powder coat removal

What is the most efficient and non destructive way to remove powder coat from engine parts?

It depends on what you call 'non-destructive'. Walnut shell blasting will remove paint but not "damage" the metal. But, it may smooth the metal surface just a bit. Since you are going to paint it again, that shouldn't be a problem. Glass bead blasting will be quicker, but smooth the surface more. Sand blasting will actually etch the surface.

Or, you can use a chemical stripper. Lots more messy, though.

About the best way we have doen it is to use stripper and set it in a black plaqstic bag in the sun for a few hours. the spray gasket remover from Permatex worked ok. the bag keeps it from evaproating so quick and the heat from the sunn let is work a little better. we had to do it 3 times before we got it all off, I didn't want to use glass beads since it was real thin alumina.

Good Luck wro87

Dr L-88...

I'm watching to see if anyone has figured out a way to remove powder coating because I've not. The above two suggestions are great ideas for paint removal but for items that have been powder coated it won't work.

So here is a bump for you... hopefully there is someone else that has crossed that bridge.

IMHO,

Willcox

Gotta agree with "Wilcox" as done my share of blasting, and works well on hard surfaces, but not so good on soft surfaces like powder coat. Really depends on the temperatuture of the powder coat used, but a heat gun usually works on just about anything.

Ask the guy I sold my 02 Corvette to. He managed to get a lot of powder coat off the wheels I had done after running them into a couple curbs.

The Permatex spray gasket remover works (not the brush on stuff...thats a different formula). In fact its how I stripped those magnesium Torq Thrusts without damaging the metal.

And this will eat through the powder coating???? If so, I'll be off to buy some tomorrow. I have some spindle supports that were powder coated and I want it off...

I use an Airplane Stripper made by Mar-hyde. You just brush it on the powder coating and let it sit for about 15-20 minutes and scrape it off. Sometimes you have to apply it a secont time, but it works very well.

Apparently Permatex has discontinued their 80646 aerosol gasket remover. Must have some "good stuff" in it that EPA doesn't like.

The company that I used for powder coating, used a oven to heat the parts to remove the powder coating. I don't know what temperature is required.
