The Steering Box on my 73 needs to be replaced or rebuilt. The car only has 39,000 miles and is all original. Should I just replace the steering box or have the original rebuilt?
have the original rebuilt by a qualified mechanic, there is someone on the forum that rebuilds them or blueprint rebuilds them. I think his name is GTR188???? Maybe someone will chime in with his name.
I am just now restoring mine and I have 39k miles. Mine is leaking everywhere. You used the word..steering gear box. I dont recognize anything that looks like a gear box so correct me if I am wrong. It looks like a PS Ram (resembles a shock) and a PS valve and four PS hoses?
What is the gear box... I have a 2nd generation Camaro and I know what its gear box looks like but there is nothing on the Vette that has anything close to that.

If you look under the hood, at the bottom of the steering column is the steering box. The steering column goes round and round where it goes into the steering box. At the bottom of the steering box is the pitman arm. It goes left and right in an arc. The pitman arm is connected to the relay rod which is connected to the tie rods which are connected to the wheel spindles. That's how your car's wheels steer.

This is the steering box (blueprinted by Gary R.).

No disrespect, but how do you know the box needs to be rebuilt? Do you have steering problems? What are the symptoms?
The steering is just a little loose. I took it by a guy who only works on Corvettes and he recommended I replace the steering box if I want to improve the steering.

I'd want something a little more concrete than that before ditching the box.

The Chevrolet Chassis Service Manual gives detailed instructions on how adjust the Lash Adjuster and the Worm Bearing Adjuster. The lash adjuster is the one on top, and most people usually just loosen the lock nut and crank down on the screw. This is not advisable, there is a strict protocol to follow to do it properly so you don't damage the internal parts.
If you let your service guy just throw parts at the car, you may end up with a steering box in worse condition than the one you have.
I wouldn't waste money on the aftermarket manuals like Chiltons or Heynes, they just don't have complete information like the official factory manual does.

And I would not waste money on the $180.00 EBay rebuilt boxes. Just new seals.
