This is for my '78. The threads all suggest that Bilstein's are the premium shock absorber and I understand that they are the most expensive. But for a daily driver, no racing, just after a good ride quality. Heavy duty OK? Sports too firm? Opinions appreciated!!
I put four on the 74 and I just love them, when I restored it I put Monroe's on it and after a year noticed the rears were shot but fronts OK.
Bought rears and were so nice I turned around and did the fronts within 2 weeks.
I am NOT a very informed person on this subject, but my limited understanding is that the type of leaf you are running makes a difference...steel or fiberglass.
That said, the rear of these cars are prone to "jounce" or " bounding" after certain type of bumps. Not usually sharp bumps, but release of recoil after larger compressive events. I've had it happen to my car in a construction area where there are sags in the pavement. The rear end gets 'pogo-ed' up by the rise of a bit of asphalt that hits both rear wheels at the same time.
The better shocks will be able to control this rebound better than the lesser ones.
I replace the shocks on my 82 with the HD Bilstein and was very upset because they bounced worse than what I took off. I exchanged them for the Sports and mann what a difference. Definitely get the Sports.
I wanted a softer , old guy ride , and went with the monroe sensa tracs on my C4, and when I rebuilt the suspension on my C3 I put them on it also. Dont know how long they'll last, but they dont bounce and its a softer ride.
