Default Fan clutch going?

I'm in the middle of detailing my 82 where I've been removing parts, cleaning, painting then reinstalling in the engine bay. I'm at the fan now and noticed the fan clutch is very oily in the front where the spring is, does this mean it's going south? I did notice last month when it was extremely hot that the temp was climbing pretty steadily while sitting in traffic with the electric auxiliary fan running. ( 180 deg temp switch) Even though they are cheap to replace I seen that Summit has a heavy duty one for about $20 more over standard. Also when I called the parts house they asked me if I had heavy duty cooling? I don't have a clue..... I would not think so but how can you tell?

Yes your fan clutch is shot, the seal is leaking the fluid that permits it to function. Read this thread to help determine if you need the HDC, in particular there may be a part number on the fan.

Your AIM lists the original GM part number for the fan clutch. Heavy duty cooling was optional for the 82s. Is it istalled on your car?

My cooling is just the standard cooling but would it be beneficial to replace the 5 blade fan with the 7 blade and the standard clutch?

I would not mix and match, standard may not hold up to 7 blade.
