on my 77 L-48 theres a strange toggle switch under the steering wheel on the metal plate with the vacuum switch that raises the headlights without turning the bulbs on,it doesnt do anything that ive noticed. does anybody have a clue what this switch is? im assuming one of the previous owners installed it for some unknown purpose, its got a black ground wire and a brown wire that seems to run either above or behind the fuse box under the dash. it clicks when you flick it and returns to its original position when you release it , i dont know why but this is driving me insane,i have to know what this switch does!!!!! any help would be appreciated
If you have an aftermarket windshield washer pump it may be attached to it. I have a toggle swich on the side of my console of my '74 that was driving me crazy. After I got the car together I turned it on and heard a buzzing sound that turned out to be the washer pump. If you can't hear the pump it might just be broken.
start chasing wires, could be anything, probly doesnt do anything,
Could be any of the above or even something crazier. Could even be a torque converter lock up switch. We could speculate for days but you'll only find out by following the wires. It certainly isn't a stock switch.

that was it haha,i just never heard or saw anything when i hit the switch before cause the wipers werent on/the engine drowned out the pump noise or the key wasnt in the right position in the ignition. anyways thank you very much everybody,i can finally get to sleep at night again! now i can foucus on the more important stuff, like the intake manifold, headers, rear window and L-82 dual snorkel air cleaner that are all taking up most of the space in my dinky apartment bedroom!
The fact that it was spring loaded to turn itself off was what made me think it was for a washer. I couldn't think of anything else that you would want to turn off by itself (you didn't say you had nitrous).
