Any one know of a template for painting the center portion of the wheel?
EDIT: I've done a 'search' but am unclear which applications had the centers painted, and which were unpainted? My wheels came OEM on a `76 . .
I can shoot the slots by taping over the front,(assume it's either flat or satin black) but apart from edging the center with tape and hoping I get it perfectly round, I wondered if there was a better method ?
I just finished redoing 8 wheels, clearcoat and black centers.
Had 3/4" masking tape on hand. Simply sliced it in half lengthwise and spent maybe a few minutes each wheel laying down the first strip around the center.
Then more tape and paper to finish it off.
Just follow the natural curve. Don't put too much thought into it!
Determine the circumference of the black painted center section. Lay out that dimension on butcher paper or something along those lines leaving an extra two or three inches of length. Roll up your template, set it down on the wheel center. Tape it closed at the circumference you want, and shoot your paint through the center of it.
Your homemade template will work the same way as the aftermarket shields you can buy to paint ralley wheels with the tires still mounted.
I cut the end out of a 3# Folgers coffee can and used it for a template. Worked fine. Put the cylinder over the center and sprayed inside the cylinder.
Excellent approaches gentlemen, thank you for sharing your thoughts. These wheels were reasonably well cared for off a `76 but I doubt they'd ever been dismounted and really cleaned or polished, so it's been a good project.
There's a Corvette show on the square in Prescott, Arizona the last weekend in September and I'd like to have them finished and mounted up on the car for that show.
We took 3rd place in C3 last year- so we've got room to improve and frankly, I think the car looks better with new carpet and better detail under the hood and suspension.

Jeepers. Metal coffee cans are getting hard to find, now that you mention it. Wonder if the six or seven I have out in the shop have become collectors' items without me knowing it.
