My 78 is being repainted. When I removed the interior I discovered some really strange sound deadening material over the rear tires inside the car. It is a tan/gray, is covered with clear plastic, and feels like hardened clay. What is it? Is it available? If not, what might be used in its place? Thanks in advance for the help. The Paint job turned out really well.
The entire rear storage area received factory sound deadener (sprayed on) and insulation (mat) before the rear carpet went in. The AIM shows the installation of each. If it's otherwise in good shape, leave it and install the new carpet over the top of it.
I think these are the 'sheets' of deadener material that is being discussed. They look like sheets of pasteboard, about 1/8" thick, that have some heavy substance mixed with the pasteboard when they are produced. I believe they help to restrict high frequency sounds from getting into the cabin (road noises) and may help restrict heat flow somewhat. Modern insulations are much more effective than what were installed in the car when new.
1978-1982 cars had a putty looking deaden-er in the rear compartment. It ran from the top most portion of the wheel hump to floor.
It was almost a light tan in color with a clear plastic, almost like a bag on top. I have some pictures of this somewhere, I'll see if I can dig them up later.
There was also a spray on coating added to the floor before this was installed.
Page 65 of the 79 aim shows the insulators and page 60 shows the spary coat.

The passenger side is in good shape, but the driver's side is pretty cracked and crumbling. I guess I'll look for a modern product to put over it. I would like to keep it as original as I can. It is going to be fun to drive. It has about 100 miles in the last 20 years.
