I wonder what the purist where saying back in the day about flares, L88 racing mods and Grand Sport that are very valuable cars now or for that matter what they think about them now. This 1978 is worth nothing in real scheme of things ands its a problem. There's things I like about the car and some I don't. But I don't bash it and I wish I had 1/10 the talent of the guys working on the car.
What constitute Custom versus Stock, I say anything that you do to your car that didn't come from factory is custom. So, Any aftermarket wheel, cup holder, Upgraded stereo, Center console elbow cushion, fancier spark plugs and wires etc., is no different than this car. Non factory is not stock whether you can see it or not.

I think it runs deeper than just the resto-nuts. Car guys are as loyal to their brand as football fans to their team. Politics are the same way. Having a common enemy gives one a sense of belonging. If that had been an LT5 DOHC motor, this would be a very different thread.
I ride a Harley, but I don't own any clothing or any accessory with their logo. I like the bike, but don't owe any loyalty to a company that just sees me as a source of income.

I'm not an expert...but I think the LT5 was designed by Lotus....and built by Mercury Marine...
I think it's a neat build....but then what do I know?...I'm putting this in my 71 original big block car...a BMW all aluminum V12- painted Chevy Orange...

Coming from the BMW World, that's cool. have you done anything internally? I don't want to threadjack, but that's not exactly you see everyday.
