Default Uh oh..... :(

I dropped the TH400 pan and replaced the gasket.
Looked at a Haynes manual and it says in there that a dry fill of transmission fluid is 22 pints. I've put in 5 litres (which I think is 10.5 of your US pints) Have I overfilled?

Just been reading that there is oil in the torq convertor etc. I thought it was a dry fill as I removed the pan.

Any help is appreciated. If I have overfilled, whats the best method of getting it out?

Thanks people....

Actually, if you have long enough hose you should be able to suck it out through the dipstick tube.

That sucks
Reckon I'll try the pipe method first. Will it be like using a siphon? It'll taste bad I reckon

You have just given me an excellent idea Man from Alaska
I have a spare one of these used for training in my firefighter days
http://www.laerdal.com/gb/doc/123/V-...l-Suction-Unit

It will be perfect and I reckon I have a couple of spare reservoirs that I can keep the fluid in

Cheers

What is your dip stick reading? That will answer your question. Draining the pan does not empty the converter, the converter has a seperate little plug to drain it.

Yeah, it holds 11 quarts, but when you drop the pan, only about half of it comes out. It sounds like you have around the right amount of fluid in there, maybe a little low. I'd fire it up, let it come up to temp, see what the dip stick says, and add fluid accordingly. What does the dipstick say now?

Keep the shiny side up!

Default Drain plug

Willie,

Remember my advice about the drain plug? If you'd done that, you would not have needed to post this thread.

Regards from Down Under.

if its the pan gasket, it will swell up in a few days and stop leaking...if... you didnt over tighten the bolts, if not, a new gasket and an inch pound torque wrench, or a gentle snug up every couple days till it stops.

Did you check the pan rail surface for warpage? (on the pan)

Generally, they'll be bowed and cupped a bit and a couple hammer blows may be required to straighten them out.

I left it overnight and gave the bolts a wee turn. The leaking stopped and then started again. I'll try again. I think one of the threads on one of the bolts wasn't too clever. I'll keep my eye on it.

Gave the edges of the pan a wee clatter with a hammer and flat feather splitter chisel.
