Am I reading anything wrong? I was thinking this was the engine block code and it should match the VIN but I don't see a match...I bought a good car at a great price and the owner said he was told the numbers match...I am thinking he was told wrong, can someone correct me if i am missing something? BTW I will love the car either way!!!!
the number on the block should match the number on the title but check to see that the vin tag on the car matches the title or you have bigger problems.
No, they dont remotely match. You didnt check the numbers before you bought it?
The VIN on the top upside down picture kinda looks like a '78. Is that what you have? Is it an L82? (or supposed to be?)
The number on the pad that should match is the VIN derivative which is shown on the left. Its not close. And I have no idea what that configuration is on the right for the assembly code/suffix/prefix.

HAHAHA! No, the Car and Title match! It just makes me think now I don't know much about the car.... Can anyone tell anything about this block number?

The block number will be found up by the bellhousing and will be something like 3970010. There will be a casting date near there, too. The pad numbers you show are the VIN derivative on the left (should have the last 5 numbers to your cars serial #) and the assembly code on the right. It will code the factory, month day and engine option. I think K is St Catherine's, Ontario??? McKinnon? Gotta find my book...

I was not able to see the car in person, it was in SanFran and I was in OK. I had a friend go look at it but he prob didn't know how to tell. The car was in such good shape and the price was really cheap so i was willing to take the chance...It is still a really nice car..

Fair enough, as long as you didnt pay for numbers matching! Now drive the heck out of it!!

It is a Candian Vette base on the Speedo being in Kilometers
the last three letters to the right will tell you what the application was i can make out tx but cant see the last letter.once you find the letters google chevy engine decoder and it will tell you what vehicle it was intended to go in,vette, camaro, station wagon, etc.it usually shows the carb. and intended trans. high perf.etc.
txd means its a 1975 350 with 165 hp and 4 barrel carb, conv. and cab means it was used in most regular cars and not high perf.applications.just my two cents.its also probably a two bolt main block which is not a problem.if it runs good and your happy that is all that matters,a numbers matching engine that smokes is worth less than a good running non matching block anyday.
from what i am reading it was used in everyday cars and trucks, not in camaros, corvettes, chevelles and so on.its just a run of the mill 165 h.p. block.if it shows a 010 on the bellhousing it has a higher nickle content in the iron block making it stronger than a grocery getter.it could of been used in a truck also but it would have been the cheaper model like a 1/4 ton work truck.
