Default 72 body work

Hey Everyone,
Been lurking for quite a while, and am still very new to corvetts, but now I'm starting to get serious about buying one. My budget is pretty low, but I am good with a wrench. So, I was looking at this 72 4sp locally and just trying to gauge if it is worth the money. I haven't been able to look inside yet, but the body itself might be a deal breaker. sorry for the long intro... Here is my first question ( I tried searching first). The paint is crack around the whole car, and I mean everywhere, is this a really bad sign? It obviously needs new paint, but what else needs to be done to smooth out that body, and what would it cost (around) to get this thing back to looking good again?

Thanks, and more questions to come.

with a car of that age it could just be that the paint was a cheap spray over and not prepped correctly and is now cracking all over or it could be there is damage into the fiberglass panels and that is causing failure of the surface causing the cracks. Pictures are the best way to better give you info. If it's the paint that is poor and the panels are good then you can strip the paint yourself and do the prepwork yourself and save tons. Painting these cars are expensive because all the labor and hours or parts removal and then reinstallation. Get some pics and post them here and everyone can pitch in on advice. But you should also research about rust issues not only with the frame but also the "birdcage" which is the metal cockpit structure before buying any C3!

Hi ob,
I agree with sully about the paint. There could be quite a few reasons for what you're seeing.
A more important issue though is the condition of the frame and birdcage as he mentions too.
A car that needs paint is not a bad project to undertake, but a car with a rusty frame or birdcage (even at a very low price!) is one to avoid for sure.
Good Luck!
Regards,
Alan

Yeah, the frame and birdcage will be checked next, hopefully by someone who know more than I do, but if the body work was going to be a killer, then I was now going to go any further.

I will post some pics of what I think are the worst spots on the body, and see what you guys think.

Thanks for the replies!

Not sure if the pics will work, but here goes... Areas of concern: On the pic of the rear near the glass there is a big rough circle. The area between the hood and the lights are wavy. There are 3 spots on the rear quarter panel that look like drywall screws coming back through a wall. Then the paint is cracked all over.
