Am looking at buying a '78 Pace Car with the Pace Car decals in place. I would like to remove the door decals and realize that they have been on the car for 34 years. Can this be done without damaging the paint and if so what is the process. Thanks, Bob Carroll
A little heat and slow, careful work might get them off, but after all this time, you could expect paint fade for the areas not covered by the graphics. The result would be that you are likely to be able to see where they once were.
They may not have been on there for 34 years. They didn't leave St. Louis installed on the cars, they were in a box in the back. It was up to the buyer to decide if he or she, wanted them installed.
When the cars were new, many people chose not to put them on the car. As the years have gone on, it seems that more and more owners of Pace Cars, have wanted to turn them into billboards, by adding the graphics.
A heat gun is the best way to remove them. If your not comfortable with doing it yourself, any body or restoration shop should be able to pop them right off for you. They remove tape stripes and graphics, all the time.
Once removed, there is a very good chance that there will be a shadow left behind by them. I don't even think it has anything to do with age or paint fade. I've seen relatively new cars, that had vinyl stripes removed, and there was still a shadow or visible hint, left where they once were.
Why not "test" by removing one of the Indy flags from the rear quarter.
These are always turning up on ebay if you find there's a "shadow" and need to put it back on.
