I have the assembly manual, how to rebuild your chevy small block, and a chiltons manual. AIM was bought through Ecklers, I think. The others were bought at books a million and autozone. Probably get them on amazon too.
The Chevrolet Chassis Service Manual is the way to go, a perfect companion to the AIM. If you care to overhaul component parts such as the alternator, starter motor, power steering pump, transmission, and so forth, you find the Chevrolet Chassis Overhaul Manual very helpful.
Compared to those two books, the Chilton manual I have is not much use - well I can think of one; Chilton manual gives the dimensions for the tool you need to make to align and adjust the 4 speed transmission linkage.
Go to the Helm's site and purchase the set for your year.
The AIM is great for pics, does not tell how to do things. You need both.
And get a good laminated electric chart. Great for tracing wires with a grease pencil or marker. There are paper ones in the Helm's but a large chart is best.
Chevrolet Chassis Service Manual and Chevrolet Chassis Overhaul Manual [if you intend to rebuild any of the major components in your car] are the way to go (as most of the above posters have said).
The Chilton's book is OK for doing service tune-ups and minor work on your car. It is what service stations had so they could change fan belts, hoses, spark plugs and points. But, it won't 'hold a candle' to the Chevy CSM.
