Dumb Headlight Switch Question

Default Dumb Headlight Switch Question
What is the purpose of the spring in that switch. Does it serve as the resistor for varying the brightness of the gauge lamps?

Mine fell out and the switch is brittle. Still functions so I'm debating on replacing it.

When switches start to fall apart you could end up with "dashboard flambe."

Avoid the cheaper switch that you'll find in the likes of Autozone. It is cheaper because it doesn't have the vacumn hose connection.
