Last month I came across a pristine 1982, 18,000 mile black exterior, light gray leather interiro piece of autmotive perfection. There was nothing needed. Heated garage stored, sparingly driven... It's gorgeous. And at 13,500 very appropriately priced. But I didn't pull the trigger. Why? I prefer my '75, with all it's quirky imperfections... I actually enjoy working on her. For me that's part of the experience.
The 82, I'd almost be afriad to put any miles on her. Which got me to thinking. I don't think I'd want to own a "perfect", trailer queen, super valuable vette. I'd love a 70 convertible big block (my birth year). A '67 stinger-hood, big-block fast back (my favorite look). A 61 283 vert. A 2010 Grandsport. One car from each generation would be a dream (yes, even a c4) But I would shy away from any as investment grade cars. I want bang for the buck and something to drive... without devaluing too much.
So I'm just curious what the expert panel here thinks is the vette they'd like to own the most. I'm not necessarily asking for the most expensive (though it could be) or rarest vette. I'm more interested in what vette, if you could have any, you'd want and why? So from the L88's to the "airbox" to the rebuilt from scratch examples, what is your ultimate vette and why?
The one I own is my ultimate 'Vette. I guess, on the surface, I wouldn't have minded a C2, but they're so darn expensive to purchase. That investment in and of itself would limit my desire to drive it.
I bought my car for cheap and it has spent more time in my garage partially disassembled than it has spent on the road. That is good and bad, I guess. I like working on it, so it is OK!
I like the 1970 because it was the absolute high point...the pinnicle...of the horsepower wars. It has the post-'69 body improvements without the '71 and after eco baggage. Not that the compression matters much...any '71, '75, or whatever year can strip all that stuff off and smoke my car...they can try at least...but from a "years" perspective, 1970 was pretty much it.
Didn't hurt things that it was a relatively limited run of 17k cars.
Everyone has their reasons, but I love my 1970 DRIVER car. And I cannot stress "DDRRRIIIIVVVEERR" enough. Very NOT special in any way, but very special in others. And absolutely 100% perfect to me. That's the way it should be...
Nice... I wonder also, how many people would list their first vette as their ultimate vette.
So maybe it's looks, power, sentimental value, important year, nice improvements from previous model... I supposed if pressed to choose, I'd go 67 stinger blig block coupe. Blue with black stinger, black interior... Just dreamin a bit. Which is great Monday afternoon medicine.
i would like to have a 70-71 vert with a 4 speed. non - matching car. I would paint it a real strong blue, drop a small block 427 in it. with grey leather interior. After market air, and just drive the wheels off of it!
oh yes, in order to make it the perfect car, i would want to win this car at the church lottery for a buck!!!
I just bought a 73, and I love parts of it (like the big block), but I love the 80-82 body style more. But ultimately, I'm in this for learning, driving and making a muscle car rather than NCRS perfection. And because I want to drive it - I want A/C, good suspension, (relatively) good mileage and serious ***** when I push all the way down (both on the gas and brake pedals).
Got a ways to go, since I've only owned for a month or so, but pretty psyched y'all are out there!
I had the privilege of driving this "holy grail" of vettes home from the local show last spring, while the owner drove mine. I guess if you are asking about "ultimates" then this car would certainly qualify. The only vettes "worth" more to rich enthusiasts would be the five C2 racers and the documented '69 ZL1.
Back to reality. Since I and probably 99.9% of the members of this forum do not have an extra million or two to spend, we need to focus on what we can afford to have and make them the best that we can...whatever that vision is. To tell you the truth, owning the "Flying Dutchman" would not make me any happier than driving what I have right now.
Hi,
For me 'ultimate' is a black, black, black, 350/350.
Regards,
Alan
Hi Alan
Looks like you and VB Steve need to sit down, have a beer together and make him an offer he can't refuse. But then again...what could YOU possibly do to improve his car? Take it all apart again and re-do every possible little thing, whether it really needs it or not?

My "Utimate Vette" is the one I'm presently building. So all is good. However, if I won the lottery, I would still keep the '80, but I'd have a '60 as well. That would be my fantasy garage.
Beautiful rides... The fantasy garage is exactly what I'm talking about. I'd keep my 75, with all my little mods, but that 67 speaks to me in some extra-supernatural way... And I certainly like the idea of having one of each generation... Maybe a couple clones.
Thanks fellas for sharing the specs and photos. And now that I've seen it, I'd have to agree whole heartedly with Alan. What a beauty.

I'm with ya brother. I'd opt for a 67 with an LS and all of the modern day creature comforts.
